A woman from Afton, Oklahoma, accused of placing her estranged husband’s dog inside a kennel before throwing it into Grand Lake, where the dog died, has been released on $10,000 bail, KFOR reported.
According to KFOR’s report, 33-year-old Kyleigh Lain Estes is facing an animal cruelty charge. Court records show she is scheduled to return to court on July 11.
On May 25, officers with the Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) discovered the dog’s body inside a kennel bearing the name โNateโ at Isles End Cove, KFOR reported.

According to the report, Estes told police the dog belonged to her estranged husband and said she was going through a divorce and feeling โoverwhelmed.โ
An affidavit stated that Estes described the five-year-old dog’s behavior as unusual and said she believed he was approaching the end of his life, according to KFOR.
According to the report, Estes allegedly told police she placed Nate inside his kennel, waited until he calmed down, took him to a nearby dock and threw the kennel into the lake with the dog still inside.
Estes reportedly told police that her actions were not motivated by retaliation over the ongoing divorce proceedings.

According to an affidavit cited by KFOR, officers observed blood on the plastic floor of the kennel, and the dog appeared to have been in the water for an extended period.
A local resident reportedly discovered the kennel beneath the pier while returning to his dock and pulling into the boat slip. Police subsequently retrieved the kennel containing Nate’s body from the lake.
Officers also noted that Estes had several other dogs at her residence. According to KFOR, she described Nate as an older dog who urinated around the house and damaged household items. She also reportedly said she had become uncomfortable leaving the dogs unattended because she believed Nate had become โaggressive.โ

However, Randall Estes told police that he had given Nate, then five years old, to his estranged wife as a gift and that the dog was not known to be aggressive, KFOR reported. He reportedly added that if Nate had urinated inside the house, it was because the dog had not been properly trained.
KFOR also reported that Kyleigh Estes and her husband, Randall Estes, filed for divorce on April 1. Before their separation, she had filed for a protective order against him, but the request was dismissed after she failed to attend the hearing, according to the report.
