YORKSHIRE TIGER ATTACK: FORENSIC FINDINGS REVEAL HOW 24-YEAR-OLD WILLIAM CHAPMAN DIED — BUT IMPORTANT QUESTIONS REMAIN
An initial post-mortem examination found that William Chapman suffered multiple traumatic injuries after entering the enclosure of Altai, an Amur tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. As investigators continue examining the circumstances, his family is left grieving a young man they described as bright, warm and deeply loved.
New details have emerged following the death of 24-year-old William Chapman, who was fatally injured after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the park’s Land of the Tigers attraction.
An initial post-mortem examination found that William died from multiple traumatic injuries following physical contact with Altai, the Amur tiger housed at the wildlife park.
The findings were presented during an opening inquest hearing at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on October 15.
Although the preliminary medical findings have established the broad cause of death, investigators are still working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
WHAT THE INITIAL POST-MORTEM REVEALED
During the inquest, coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes explained that William sustained multiple traumatic injuries after being approached by the tiger.
She told the hearing:
“He was approached by the tiger and the ensuing physical contact between the tiger and Mr Chapman led to him sustaining multiple traumatic injuries which rapidly led to his death.”
The initial examination established the broad medical cause of death.
However, senior coroner Nicola Mundy said her office was still awaiting a more substantial report detailing the full extent of William’s injuries.
Claims circulating online that exactly 12 bones were broken have not been confirmed by the coroner or investigating authorities.
The distinction is important: the preliminary findings establish multiple traumatic injuries, but the detailed medical report is still outstanding.
HOW THE TRAGEDY UNFOLDED AT YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK
William visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park on October 10.
According to evidence presented at the inquest, he entered the Land of the Tigers enclosure at approximately 1:30 p.m. after climbing over two fences.
The enclosure housed Altai, a male Amur tiger.
Once inside, William was approached by the animal. The physical encounter resulted in the injuries that ultimately claimed his life.
Park employees activated their emergency response procedures and secured the tiger.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service dispatched emergency personnel, including two ambulances and an air ambulance.
Despite the efforts of those who responded, William was pronounced dead at the scene.
South Yorkshire Police subsequently launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
WHO WAS WILLIAM CHAPMAN?
William Harry Bruce Chapman was born in 2002 and was 24 years old when he died.
He was living in Doncaster and worked as a self-employed online trader.
His family released a deeply personal tribute describing him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” who was dearly loved.
Their statement also revealed that William had experienced significant mental health difficulties over a number of years.
He had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had received support from adult mental health services.
His family expressed concerns about aspects of his contact with mental health services before his death.
The inquest heard that although William had been under the care of local services, he was described as highly functioning and independent, with no care requirements.
These details have prompted further questions about the support he received and whether there were opportunities to address concerns before the tragedy.
A SECOND INVESTIGATION INTO HIS MENTAL HEALTH CARE
The inquest also revealed that Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust had commissioned an independent patient safety investigation following William’s death.
The investigation is intended to examine concerns relating to his care and contact with mental health services.
The trust confirmed that William’s family had been informed and would be supported in participating in the process.
Separately, City of Doncaster Council, which is responsible for licensing Yorkshire Wildlife Park, launched a health and safety investigation.
South Yorkshire Police are also continuing their enquiries.
These investigations address different aspects of the tragedy, including the circumstances of the incident at the park and the concerns raised by William’s family.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ALTAI, THE TIGER?
Following the incident, many members of the public expressed concern about Altai’s welfare and questioned whether the animal would be euthanised.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park subsequently issued a statement confirming that Altai was safe and would not be euthanised as a result of the incident.
The park emphasized that the tiger’s ongoing welfare remained a priority for its animal care team.
It also confirmed that it would continue cooperating with South Yorkshire Police and other relevant authorities.
The park temporarily closed following the tragedy before reopening on October 16.
Staff members affected by the incident were offered specialist trauma support.
THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS HAVE NOT YET BEEN ANSWERED
Although the initial post-mortem findings have clarified the broad cause of William’s death, several questions remain.
Investigators are still examining the circumstances surrounding his entry into the enclosure, the events leading up to the encounter and the wider safety considerations.
The coroner’s office is awaiting a more detailed medical report.
Authorities are also examining witness statements and relevant CCTV footage.
The opening inquest hearing was adjourned, with a full inquest scheduled for March 18, 2027.
Until then, the findings should be treated as preliminary rather than a complete account of everything that happened.
A FAMILY LEFT WITH AN UNIMAGINABLE LOSS
Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of this story is the family now left to live with the loss of someone they described as bright, warm and engaging.
William was just 24.
His family had expressed concerns about his health and the support he received, and they are now facing a tragedy that has brought renewed attention to those concerns.
They chose not to attend the initial inquest hearing because they were finding the circumstances incredibly difficult.
The coroner acknowledged their grief and arranged for them to receive updates about the proceedings.
As the investigations continue, the focus remains on establishing the full circumstances of William’s death and addressing the questions raised by his loved ones.
William Chapman was more than a headline about a tiger attack. He was a son, a loved one and a young man whose life mattered to the people around him. May his family find strength and comfort during this incredibly difficult time.
