A Connecticut man has been arrested after witnesses reported a disturbing incident involving a dog at a popular public recreation area.

Thomas Michel, 60, of Derby, was taken into custody after police responded to reports that a dog was allegedly being physically mistreated on O’Sullivan’s Island, according to authorities.

Witnesses who saw the incident said they attempted to intervene out of concern for the animal’s welfare. However, police allege that Michel responded by making threats toward individuals who tried to help, escalating an already troubling situation.

Officers arrived at the scene and immediately removed the dog from Michel’s custody to ensure its safety. The animal was subsequently placed in a secure environment where it could receive proper care and protection.

During the investigation, authorities also discovered that Michel was allegedly in possession of handgun ammunition. Because he is prohibited from possessing such items due to a previous felony conviction, additional charges were filed.

According to police records, Michel has prior convictions involving assault and burglary offenses.

He now faces multiple charges, including animal cruelty, criminal possession of ammunition, threatening in the second degree, and breach of peace.

The dog is reported to be safe following the incident.

The case has sparked strong reactions from local residents, many praising the bystanders who chose to step forward rather than ignore what they believed was happening.

“That dog couldn’t speak for itself,” one community member said. “Thankfully, people were willing to act.”

Authorities have not released further details regarding the dog’s condition, but animal welfare advocates say the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting suspected mistreatment whenever concerns arise.

For now, the focus remains on ensuring the animal receives the care and protection it needs while legal proceedings continue.
