What began as a summer day beside the ocean ended with a father making a decision that would define the final moments of his life.

When swimmers began struggling in the water off Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, Kevin Foster realized that two of the people in danger were his teenage sons, Kenneth and Kaden. He entered the ocean as the group fought against a powerful rip current.

His sons survived.

Kevin did not.

The July 31 tragedy has left his family mourning a husband and father remembered not only for what he did in the water that afternoon, but for the life of service and community involvement he had built long before it.

An Emergency Unfolds at Long Point

The incident happened near Long Point on the south shore of Martha’s Vineyard.

At approximately 3:47 p.m. on Friday, July 31, the West Tisbury Police Department, West Tisbury Fire Rescue personnel and Tri-Town Medical Staff responded to a report of swimmers in distress. Emergency crews arrived at the scene at roughly the same time.

There were no lifeguards stationed at the private beach.

However, three lifeguards from another beach about five miles away also responded. After arriving, they immediately entered the ocean to assist swimmers who were having difficulty making it back to land.

Among those caught in the dangerous conditions were Kevin’s sons.

Faced with the sight of Kenneth, Kaden and other swimmers struggling offshore, Kevin went into the water in an attempt to help.

The rescue effort eventually brought four people back to shore. Kenneth and Kaden survived the ordeal.

Kevin was pulled from the water and transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, but he could not be saved.

A Family Thankful to Those Who Tried to Help

Even while confronting an unimaginable loss, the Foster family expressed gratitude toward the people who responded during the emergency.

They thanked the first responders who rushed to the scene and put themselves into dangerous conditions to assist the family and the other swimmers.

Their gratitude also extended beyond professional rescuers.

The family acknowledged beachgoers who witnessed the emergency and stepped forward with courage and compassion during the chaotic rescue. They recognized that those people, too, would continue carrying memories of what happened that afternoon.

For Kevin’s loved ones, the tragedy took place somewhere with deep personal meaning.

His wife, Nadia, later wrote that her husband died swimming off Martha’s Vineyard, a place he loved, while surrounded by people he loved and who loved him.

She described the family’s grief as immense and asked for privacy as she, their sons, Kevin’s mother, Racelle Devoe, and their wider circle of relatives and close friends began mourning.

The Man His Community Knew

Kevin’s death was particularly devastating to those who knew how deeply involved he had been in the lives of people around him.

An Arkansas native, he became a marketing executive and a prominent member of his community. His work outside his professional career included service on the Cambridge Community Preservation Act committee, where he was involved in efforts connected with preserving affordable housing and strengthening the community.

But many of the tributes following his death focused less on titles and more on relationships.

Massachusetts state Rep. Marjorie Decker, a childhood friend of Nadia’s, described how closely Kevin had become woven into her own family.

Decker had known Nadia since they were five years old. When Kevin entered Nadia’s life, Decker said he quickly became part of hers as well — someone she regarded like a brother, an uncle to her children and another son to her mother.

Most importantly, she remembered him as an exceptional husband and devoted father.

Decker also revealed another meaningful detail: she had been the person who introduced Kevin and Nadia.

Watching the couple build their life together, she said, became one of the great joys connected to that introduction. Kevin and Nadia created a home centered on love, laughter and purpose while raising Kenneth and Kaden.

That commitment to family mirrored the way the Fosters treated people beyond their home.

According to Decker, the family had long opened both their house and their hearts to others, creating an environment where people felt welcomed and valued.

After Kevin’s death, much of that generosity began returning to the family.

Thousands Rally Around Kenneth and Kaden

As news of the tragedy spread, friends, neighbors and others responded with an outpouring of support.

A GoFundMe was established to create an education fund for Kenneth and Kaden. By the time the story was published, donations had surpassed $281,000.

For a family suddenly forced to imagine a future without Kevin, the response became a visible demonstration of how many lives he and his family had touched.

Nadia thanked those who contacted the family, stood beside them, prayed, brought food and offered comfort.

In the darkest period of their lives, she wrote, the support surrounding them reminded the family that they were still held by an extraordinary community.

Remembering a Life Beyond Its Final Moments

Kevin was laid to rest on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

His funeral home remembrance described a life shaped by service, faith, kindness and a drive for excellence.

The circumstances of his death are heartbreaking: a father seeing his sons and others in trouble and entering the ocean to help them.

But the tributes that followed reveal a larger story.

Kevin Foster was a husband, father, son, friend, professional and community advocate whose relationships stretched far beyond his immediate household. The support now surrounding Nadia, Kenneth and Kaden reflects decades of connections built through friendship, service and generosity.

His sons came home from the water that afternoon.

Their father did not.

And for the people mourning him, that final act of rushing toward those he loved has become inseparable from the way they remember the rest of his life — as a man whose instinct was to show up for others when they needed him most.
