MAISIE WAS BORN WITH A RARE ENCEPHALOCELE AND WITHOUT A RIGHT EYE, NOSTRIL OR EAR, YET SHE CONTINUES TO AMAZE HER DOCTORS

When Maisie Bea Smith arrived on Valentine’s Day, her parents welcomed their precious daughter into the world with a mixture of overwhelming love, hope and uncertainty.
Before her birth, Maisie had been diagnosed with an encephalocele, a rare condition in which part of the skull does not fully form. In Maisie’s case, the location of the condition was considered particularly complex, with doctors warning that it could have significant implications for her brain development.

But from the very beginning, Maisie has surprised everyone.
Her parents had met with numerous specialists before her delivery and continued to work closely with medical teams after she arrived in the NICU. Rather than seeing only the challenges ahead, many doctors have been struck by how remarkably well their tiny daughter is doing.

Maisie’s uniqueness is immediately visible. The right side of her face did not fully develop, and she was born without a right eye, nostril or ear. Her skull is also formed differently, reflecting the equally unique way her brain has developed.

Yet to her parents, those differences are only a small part of who she is.
They describe their daughter as a “feisty, firecracker of a girl” who has already defied expectations in ways they never imagined possible.

Maisie may face developmental challenges as she grows, but her parents are determined to stand beside her through every step of the journey.

“We will be right here — equipping her, championing her, and adoring her every single step of the way,” they shared.

And despite all the uncertainty surrounding her future, her family sees something far more powerful than a diagnosis.

“It is impossible to deny Maisie’s incredible testimony, and she’s only three days old,” they said. “What an honor of a lifetime it is to be chosen as her parents.”
