ANGELICA BROPHY CASE: HUMAN REMAINS FOUND NEAR SEARCH AREA — BUT POLICE SAY THEY ARE NOT BELIEVED TO BE HERS
The disappearance of 44-year-old Angelica Brophy, an Oceanside emergency-room nurse and mother of two, remains unresolved more than six weeks after she vanished in Southern California.
The latest development came after human remains were discovered near Palomar Mountain, the same general area where Angelica’s abandoned vehicle was found.
But authorities have stressed that the remains are not currently believed to be Angelica.
HUMAN REMAINS DISCOVERED DURING SEARCH
On August 12, around 4:30 p.m., a volunteer Search and Rescue team discovered human remains in an embankment near the 33000 block of South Grade Road in Pauma Valley.
The discovery was made several miles from the area where Angelica’s vehicle had been found.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit has taken over the remains investigation, while the Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine the person’s identity and cause and manner of death.
Authorities have not established any connection between those remains and Angelica’s disappearance.
ANGELICA’S CAR WAS FOUND WITHOUT HER
Angelica was reported missing on July 6, 2026.
Police determined that she was last seen at Harrah’s Resort in Valley Center at approximately 3:30 p.m. Surveillance later showed her entering Palomar Mountain State Park alone roughly 50 minutes later.
Her vehicle was discovered in a parking lot inside the park on July 9.
Angelica was nowhere to be found.
Her phone also could not be successfully located through a carrier “ping,” with investigators saying it appeared to be either switched off or out of battery.
MASSIVE SEARCHES PRODUCED NO SIGN OF HER
Search-and-rescue crews spent days examining the rugged mountain environment.
Teams included:
- San Diego County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue
- California State Parks
- Oceanside Police
- U.S. Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue
- Canine teams
- Specialized dive teams
Divers also searched a nearby pond after investigators considered the possibility that Angelica could have entered the water.
Despite extensive searches and additional operations based on investigative leads, she was not located.
Ground search operations in the park were later suspended, although the missing-person investigation remains active.
POLICE HAVE NOT ESTABLISHED FOUL PLAY
One of the most important details is that Oceanside Police have repeatedly said they have not found evidence of foul play.
That does not mean investigators have ruled out every possibility.
It means authorities have not publicly established that Angelica was harmed by another person.
Police continue to follow new information and investigative leads.
HER FAMILY IS STILL SEARCHING
Angelica’s family and friends have refused to give up.
Her brother Ramon Fabregas previously said the family was conducting its own searches alongside volunteers and would continue pushing until she was found.
Angelica is described as a devoted mother, wife, emergency-room nurse, experienced hiker and runner.
A family website created to help locate her says she was last known to be wearing black leggings, a light-gray quarter-zip pullover and white running shoes and may have been carrying a blue-and-pink pineapple backpack.

July 6: Angelica is seen at Harrah’s Resort.
Around 4:20 p.m.: She enters Palomar Mountain State Park.
July 9: Her vehicle is discovered abandoned in the park.
July 9–13: Ground searches and dive operations fail to locate her.
July 22: Police announce additional searches based on investigative leads but say Angelica remains missing.
August 12: Human remains are discovered near Palomar Mountain.
August 13: Authorities clarify that the remains are not believed to be Angelica.
ONE DISCOVERY — BUT STILL NO ANSWER
The discovery of human remains naturally renewed attention on Angelica’s case.
But investigators have made the distinction clear:
The remains found near Palomar Mountain are not currently believed to belong to Angelica Brophy.
Her whereabouts remain unknown, and authorities continue investigating.
