MIDDLESBROUGH, England — A devastating collision on the A66 that claimed the lives of seven people, including two police officers, is now being investigated as part of a much wider suspected organized-crime feud.

They were traveling in the Passat during the early hours of Saturday when the vehicle became involved in a police pursuit.

But investigators are now examining events that allegedly occurred around 40 minutes before the fatal collision.

According to reports, a Volvo XC60 rammed the home of Cole Worthy’s father, Gye Worthy, at around 3 a.m.

The Passat was allegedly then being used to search for those believed to be responsible for the attack.

There is no suggestion that Gye Worthy was involved in criminal activity, and police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

THE PURSUIT ENDED JUST SECONDS BEFORE THE CRASH

By approximately 3:36 a.m., the Passat had become the subject of a high-speed police pursuit.

Police had reportedly been alerted to the vehicle after an automatic number-plate recognition system flagged it.

The pursuit continued for several minutes before the Passat entered the A66 traveling in the wrong direction.

Police called off the pursuit shortly before the catastrophic collision.

Moments later, the Passat collided head-on with a police vehicle.

The impact killed everyone inside both vehicles.

TWO OFFICERS WERE AMONG THE SEVEN WHO DIED

The police officers killed were PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, both members of Cleveland Police.

Blades was remembered as a devoted father and former teacher and youth football coach.

Clough, a former soldier who had served overseas, was also remembered for his dedication to public service.

The officers were not part of the original pursuit, according to reports. They were in the area assisting police activity when their vehicle became involved in the fatal collision.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief from colleagues, relatives and members of the local community.

THE FIVE YOUNG MEN ARE NOW AT THE CENTER OF A WIDER INVESTIGATION

The latest investigation has raised questions about whether the five passengers were connected to an organized criminal network operating in the Teesside area.

Police have arrested 17 people in total in connection with the wider investigation, according to the latest reports.

Worthy had convictions involving vehicle offenses, assault and threatening behavior.

Matusiak had previously admitted driving-related offenses.

And Rae had convictions involving offenses including theft, vehicle-related crime, drug possession and assaulting a police officer.

Cahill had no previous convictions, according to the reports.

Those records are now being examined as investigators try to understand the circumstances leading up to the A66 tragedy.
