MISSING HIKER FOUND DEAD FOUR DAYS AFTER VANISHING IN CALIFORNIA CANYON

A four-day search for a 24-year-old California man has ended in tragedy after his body was discovered in the Auburn State Recreation Area.

Ian Roberts, of Roseville, California, was last seen at around 9:45 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, when he went on a solo hike in the American River Canyon area. After he failed to return home, his family reported him missing early the following morning.

HIS CAR WAS FOUND — BUT IAN WAS GONE

Investigators determined that Roberts had parked his vehicle at Overlook Park before hiking down toward the canyon.

His car was located, but there was initially no sign of him.

The search quickly expanded, with approximately 100 search-and-rescue personnel joining the operation. Helicopters, drones, K-9 teams and marine units searching the American River and its shoreline were all deployed.

The rugged terrain and temperatures reaching the mid-90s made the search especially difficult.

 FOUR DAYS LATER, THE SEARCH ENDED

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, authorities announced that Roberts had been found deceased inside the Auburn State Recreation Area.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said preliminary information indicated that he appeared to have slipped and fallen down a steep embankment.

Because the discovery occurred within Auburn city limits, the Auburn Police Department is handling the death investigation.

POLICE DO NOT SUSPECT FOUL PLAY

Authorities stressed that the investigation is still ongoing.

However, police currently say there is no indication of foul play, and the circumstances appear consistent with an accidental fall. Investigators will continue examining the available evidence before formally concluding the case.

That distinction is important: the accidental-fall explanation is preliminary, not yet a final determination of the cause and manner of death.

For four days, rescuers and volunteers searched the canyon hoping to bring Roberts home safely.

Instead, his family received the devastating news that he had been found dead.

The sheriff’s office expressed its condolences to Roberts’ loved ones and thanked the numerous professional rescuers and volunteers who participated in the search.
