22-YEAR-OLD FOUND DEAD BETWEEN TWO GRAVES AT ALABAMA CEMETERY — FAMILY SAYS “IT DOESN’T FEEL REAL”
A quiet Alabama cemetery became the center of a homicide investigation after a 22-year-old man was found dead between two gravesites — leaving his family devastated and investigators searching for answers.
Vanol Lucky, known to loved ones as “VL” or “Babsco,” was found at Gethsemane Cemetery in Prichard, Alabama, on Thursday, Sept. 3, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies had been called after receiving a report of a deceased man at the cemetery. When they arrived, they found Lucky lying between two gravesites with a fatal gunshot wound, authorities said.
The unusual location immediately raised questions.
WHY WAS HE THERE?
Authorities have not said whether Lucky had any connection to the two people buried in the nearby graves.
They also have not publicly explained why he was at the cemetery, whether he had been meeting someone there, or how long he had been there before his body was discovered.
As of Friday, investigators had not announced a suspect or person of interest in the case. The circumstances surrounding Lucky’s death remain under investigation.
That uncertainty has left his family struggling to understand how a young man they loved could suddenly be gone.
Lucky had reportedly been active on Facebook shortly before his death. Just one day before his body was discovered, he shared a simple message:
“Top of the morning. God is good!”
There was nothing in the post that publicly suggested what was about to happen.
“THIS LOSS STILL DOESN’T FEEL REAL”
After news of Lucky’s death spread, friends and relatives began sharing tributes online.
One loved one wrote that saying “RIP” did not even feel right because the loss still did not seem real.
Lucky was remembered as someone deeply loved by the people around him, with his family now facing the painful task of saying goodbye while investigators work to determine what happened.
His mother, Eva Kemp, announced that a candlelight vigil is planned for Tuesday in his honor.
POLICE ARE ASKING FOR HELP
The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have information about Lucky’s final hours to come forward.
Investigators specifically want to hear from anyone who may have seen Lucky or been with him during the 24 hours before his body was discovered.
Authorities have provided the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office phone number, 251-574-8633, for anyone with information.
For now, one of the most striking details in the case remains unanswered:
Why was a 22-year-old man found lying between two graves at an Alabama cemetery?
And who was with him before his final moments?
Those are questions investigators will now have to answer as Lucky’s family waits for the truth.
His loved ones are left with grief, memories — and a final social-media message that now carries a heartbreaking weight.
“God is good.”
One day later, Vanol Lucky was gone.
