Five-year-old Declan McCombs was battling terminal neuroblastoma when he found strength in the most unexpected place: Jason Voorhees, the iconic character from Friday the 13th.

To Declan, Jason was not a terrifying monster. He represented fearlessness. Declan believed that if someone as tough as Jason would not be afraid of cancer, then neither should he. His childlike logic provided him with incredible resilience throughout his painful medical journey.

When a passionate cosplayer known as SteelCityJason learned about Declan’s unique inspiration, he decided to reach out. Suited up in the famous hockey mask and costume, the cosplayer visited the young boy. Far from being frightened, Declan ran straight into his arms, embraced him, and said, “I love you, Jason.”

That initial meeting marked the beginning of a profound bond. The cosplayer returned repeatedly, bringing much-needed laughter and comfort to Declan and his family. He even helped organize a special horror-themed birthday celebration to fill the little boy’s final days with joy.

Declan passed away in November 2021 at just five years old, but his extraordinary courage left a lasting legacy. To this day, SteelCityJason carries Declan’s heartfelt words inscribed inside his mask at every appearance, ensuring the memory of his brave young friend stays close to his heart.

Sometimes heroes do not fit traditional molds, and true strength comes from the most unexpected places. Declan McCombs showed the world that courage is not the absence of fear, but the determination to face it head-on. Rest peacefully, Declan. You were braver than most of us will ever know.
