What was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of Stephen Junker’s life ended in unimaginable tragedy.

The 58-year-old Minnesota pastor was celebrating his son’s wedding aboard a cruise ship off the coast of Italy when he was found face-down in a swimming pool on August 16.

According to a family fundraiser, Stephen had suffered a devastating spinal cord injury and was nearly drowned in the pool.

He was rushed by the Italian Coast Guard to a hospital in Naples, where doctors performed emergency surgery.

But the damage was catastrophic.

Stephen was left quadriplegic and unable to breathe without the help of a ventilator.

Days later, on August 23, he was transported back to Minnesota for further treatment at Mayo Clinic.

His family hoped for a miracle.

“EVERYTHING THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE DONE”

For weeks, Stephen’s loved ones waited as doctors continued fighting to save him.

But further testing revealed injuries that could not be treated.

On September 4, Stephen died surrounded by his wife, children, parents and friends, his daughter Elizabeth announced.

His family said they were grateful to the medical teams who cared for him and to everyone who supported them during the devastating ordeal.

What began as a family celebration had become a fight for Stephen’s life.

And then came the heartbreaking news that the fight was over.

A PASTOR, A FATHER AND A MAN DEVOTED TO HELPING OTHERS

Before becoming a pastor, Stephen had worked as a pharmacist after graduating from Creighton University.

He later followed his calling into ministry and served as pastor of Chippewa Lutheran Church in Minnesota for nearly a decade.

Those who knew him remembered his animated sermons, his love of conversation and his willingness to help anyone in need.

But to his family, he was also a husband, father of five and grandfather.

His wife, Jeanine, paid tribute to his deep faith as the family and church community mourned his loss.

Stephen is survived by his wife, five children, a grandson, his parents, his sister and many other relatives and friends.

A FAMILY CELEBRATION THAT ENDED IN HEARTBREAK

The cruise had brought the Junker family together for a wedding.

Instead, the family now faces an unimaginable loss.

One moment, Stephen was celebrating his son’s new beginning.

Weeks later, his loved ones were saying goodbye.

His funeral service is scheduled for September 11 at Chippewa Lutheran Church.
