Thousands of mourners gathered in Hartlepool for the funeral of PC Matthew Blades — but amid the uniforms, flags and solemn ceremony, one tiny detail made the heartbreaking farewell deeply personal.
On the roof of the hearse carrying Matthew’s coffin was a floral tribute spelling out one simple word:
“DAD.”
It was a final message from the family to the man who was not only a police officer and a community hero, but the father of two young boys.
Matthew Blades, 37, was laid to rest at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in his hometown of Hartlepool after losing his life in the horrific A66 collision on August 22.
His colleague, PC Tom Clough, 38, also died in the same incident, alongside five young men travelling in the other vehicle.
A FATHER BEFORE EVERYTHING ELSE
Matthew was remembered as a devoted husband and father who had built his life around his family and his community.
Away from policing, he was also heavily involved in youth football and had been coaching young players in Hartlepool.
His eldest son even played on one of the teams he coached — giving father and son a special connection through the sport Matthew loved.
But at his funeral, the word on the hearse seemed to say everything that hundreds of formal tributes could not.
DAD.
No rank.
No police title.
No long message.
Just the word his two boys knew him by.
HUNDREDS OF OFFICERS STOOD FOR HIM
The streets around Hutton Avenue were lined with police officers as Matthew made his final journey.
Standard bearers represented police forces from across the UK, while colleagues stood shoulder to shoulder outside the church.
Some officers wore special identity patches bearing the names and numbers of Matthew and PC Tom Clough — a quiet reminder that the two men were still part of the police family even as their colleagues gathered to say goodbye.
The procession included mounted officers, pipers and a drummer, while “Amazing Grace” was played as Matthew’s Union Flag-draped coffin was carried into the packed church.
Members of the public also filled the streets to pay their respects.

Before the funeral, Matthew’s wife had shared an emotional tribute describing him as her “beloved husband,” “best friend” and “the most devoted father” to their two boys.
She said the children would grow up knowing what an incredible father he was.
And perhaps that is why the floral tribute on the hearse carried such enormous weight.
As Matthew’s final journey passed through the town he called home, the message was unmistakable:
He was a police officer who served his community.
He was a coach who inspired children.
He was a husband deeply loved by his wife.
But to two little boys standing without their father…
He was simply Dad. 💔
His wife ended her tribute with words that now feel even more poignant:
“Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our superhero. Our Matt and Dad.”
And as thousands gathered to say goodbye, that final word on the hearse may have been the most powerful tribute of all.
