Zohran Mamdani and AOC Draw Attention During 25th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez drew attention during the 25th-anniversary commemoration of the September 11 attacks at Ground Zero on September 11, 2026.

During the televised ceremony, Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez were shown smiling and speaking with one another while the names of the victims were being read.

The moment stood in contrast to the deeply emotional atmosphere surrounding the ceremony. Family members of those who died on September 11, 2001, took part in the traditional reading of the victims’ names, with many relatives visibly moved and some seen crying as they honored their loved ones.

The annual ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan remains one of the most significant moments of remembrance for the victims of the attacks. Reuters and The Associated Press confirmed that family members participated in the reading of the names during the 25th-anniversary observance.

Images of Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez interacting during the ceremony quickly attracted attention because of the solemn nature of the occasion and the emotional scenes taking place around them.

However, the footage alone does not establish what the two politicians were discussing or why they were smiling. Their brief interaction should not, by itself, be interpreted as evidence of how either person viewed or regarded the commemoration.
