TASIA FORTUNE’S DEATH HAS OFFICIALLY BEEN RULED A HOMICIDE — BUT POLICE SAY THE CASE IS FAR FROM OVER

A case that has gripped Jackson, Mississippi, has taken a major turn after police arrested a man in connection with the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, a mother of four whose body was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant home.

Fortune was discovered on August 3, 2026, in the backyard of a vacant property on Road of Remembrance in west Jackson.

For weeks, investigators faced mounting questions over what had happened to her.

Now, the investigation has reached a dramatic new stage.

DEATH OFFICIALLY RULED A HOMICIDE

On Thursday night, the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially classified Fortune’s death as a homicide, Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced.

That determination allowed investigators to move forward with search and arrest warrants they had already secured.

Police then arrested 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff, also identified by the nickname “Jock,” after officers encountered him walking on Capitol Street.

Authorities said Ratliff had an association with Fortune, but they have not publicly explained the nature of their relationship.

Police have not released a motive or detailed how Fortune died.

‘THIS IS NOT CLOSURE’

Chief Brackney stressed that the arrest does not mark the end of the investigation.

Investigators have interviewed nearly 15 people and executed search warrants as they continue working to establish exactly what happened to Fortune.

“Additional arrests” are expected, according to police.

“This is not closure,” Brackney said, emphasizing that detectives are continuing to follow the evidence.

A FAMILY STILL WAITING FOR ANSWERS

Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, has repeatedly said she does not believe her daughter took her own life.

She previously told reporters that she did not believe race was a factor in her daughter’s death, despite widespread public concern because of the manner in which Fortune was found and Mississippi’s history of racial violence.

The family has been seeking answers since Fortune’s body was discovered.

Tasia was remembered as a mother of four who had endured significant hardships in her life. Her family said she had been trying to rebuild her future and was hoping to start a cleaning business.
