SHE ONLY ASKED FOR MONEY — MOMENTS LATER, A STRANGER WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES AT A FLORIDA GAS STATION
A routine stop for gas turned into a terrifying scene when police say a woman she had never met deliberately ignited gasoline, leaving the victim with serious burns.
It began with a seemingly ordinary request.
On the evening of Sept. 10, 2026, a 41-year-old woman was filling up her vehicle at a Mobil gas station in St. Petersburg, Florida, when another woman approached her.
According to police, the stranger first asked to borrow her phone.
The woman agreed.
Then came another request — for money.
She refused.
What happened next left witnesses stunned.
POLICE SAY THE GASOLINE IGNITED
Authorities say Eleanor Crawford, 41, deliberately ignited gasoline with a lighter while the victim was at the pump.
The victim’s vehicle became engulfed in flames, and she suffered second-degree burns to her arms and back, according to police.
She was rushed to Tampa General Hospital for treatment.
Despite the severity of her injuries, authorities said she was stabilized and is expected to survive.
A witness who saw the incident described the sudden blaze as a “fireball” and rushed to help the injured woman before calling 911.
THE TWO WOMEN DIDN’T KNOW EACH OTHER
Perhaps one of the most disturbing details for investigators is that police say Crawford and the victim were strangers.
There was reportedly no known prior relationship between them.
Police have not established a clear motive for the alleged attack.
That question is now central to the investigation: Why did a simple request for money allegedly turn into such a terrifying confrontation?
SUSPECT ARRESTED NEARBY
Crawford was arrested close to the scene and is facing felony charges of attempted murder and arson, according to public court records.
She is being held on a $350,000 bond while the case moves forward.
As of PEOPLE’s report, it was unclear whether she had retained an attorney.
Police emphasized how unusual and severe the incident was.
Assistant Police Chief Mike Kovacsev described the victim’s injuries as horrific, while also noting that emergency responders were able to stabilize her and that she is expected to survive.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not announced a definitive motive.
For the victim, what began as an ordinary trip to a gas station became a terrifying encounter with someone she had never met.
Now, investigators are left trying to piece together what happened in those critical moments — and what allegedly drove a stranger to turn a routine stop for gasoline into a life-threatening ordeal.
The victim survived. But the questions surrounding the attack are only beginning.
