NINE WOMEN FOUND DEAD IN SOUTH AFRICA AS POLICE INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE SERIAL KILLER LINK

Fears of a possible serial killer have gripped communities near Johannesburg after the bodies of nine women were discovered across the Ekurhuleni area over the past two months, prompting a major police investigation.

The latest discovery came on Thursday, September 17, when a passerby found the body of an unidentified woman near a construction site in the Dawn Park area. Police said she appeared to be around 30 years old. Her identity had not yet been established, and forensic investigators were still working to determine the official cause of death.

The discovery was added to an investigation already examining the deaths of eight other women found in the same municipality.

According to South African police, the victims were all women in their 20s or 30s, and several were found either naked or partially clothed. Investigators have also noted similarities in injuries and the locations where some of the bodies were discovered.

Those similarities have raised fears that the cases could be connected.

However, authorities have repeatedly stressed that they have not confirmed that a serial killer is responsible.

Gauteng provincial police commissioner Fred Kekana said investigators are considering multiple possibilities, including the involvement of several suspects or completely separate perpetrators. Detectives are comparing evidence, timelines, locations, victim profiles and the circumstances surrounding each case before reaching a conclusion.

The first five bodies were discovered in or around Kempton Park, while others were found in locations between roughly 25 and 35 kilometers away. Several were discovered in open areas close to major roads, and police believe some of the women may have been harmed somewhere other than where their bodies were later found.

The pace of the discoveries has added to the alarm. Police said the latest five bodies were found within only four days this week.

One of the identified victims was Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, 38, who disappeared while out for a run on September 9. Her eight-year-old daughter became concerned when she did not return home, prompting relatives to contact police. Her body was later found and identified by her family.

Police have now assembled a multidisciplinary team, including detectives and specialists who investigate complex violent crimes. Authorities have also appealed to the public for information that could help identify the victims and establish whether the cases share a common perpetrator.

A $25,000 reward has reportedly been offered for information leading to the apprehension of those responsible. Police have also urged the public not to circulate photographs of the bodies or unverified claims online, warning that such material could cause further fear and potentially encourage copycat crimes.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the investigation to be treated as a priority, as the deaths have renewed concerns about violence against women in the country.

For now, one question remains at the center of the investigation:

Are these nine deaths connected — or are authorities dealing with multiple separate cases?

Investigators are working to answer that question as the search for the truth continues.
