BRITISH MAN FIGHTS FOR HIS LIFE AFTER SEIZURE ON FAMILY HOLIDAY LEADS TO EMERGENCY BRAIN SURGERY

A British man is fighting for his life after suffering a seizure and sustaining a devastating head injury just hours into what was supposed to be a special family holiday in Lanzarote.

Paul Grant, 43, had travelled to the Canary Islands with his mother, sister and brother-in-law for a week-long all-inclusive trip to celebrate his mother’s birthday.

The family had spent their first day relaxing by the pool and having dinner together.

But at around 5am the following morning, everything changed.

Paul’s mother, who was sharing a hotel room with him, woke after hearing unusual noises and discovered her son having a seizure and covered in blood.

His family believes he fell during the seizure and struck his head against a wall.

His sister, Kimberley Sharp, from Windsor, Berkshire, said her mother immediately tried to help him before the family called for an ambulance.

“He was covered in blood, it was in the hallway, we think he banged it on the wall,” Kimberley said.

“He was bleeding from his head and his nose and still having a fit.”

Paul eventually regained some awareness but was extremely confused and struggling to communicate normally.

He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where his condition quickly became more serious.

DOCTORS RUSHED TO SAVE HIS LIFE

At around 9am, Paul’s family were told that he had been admitted to intensive care.

Doctors reportedly discovered that he had suffered bleeding on the brain and said the hospital was not equipped to provide all the treatment he required.

Paul was subsequently airlifted to University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín in Gran Canaria.

Hours later, his family received another devastating phone call.

Doctors told them the pressure inside Paul’s brain had become dangerously high and emergency surgery was required to give him a chance of survival.

According to his sister, doctors told the family that without the operation, Paul could die.

The surgery was carried out that day.

Surgeons removed the right side of Paul’s skull to relieve the pressure on his brain.

The operation reportedly went ahead without complications, but his family says he remains in a critical condition.

Paul is still heavily sedated and has been placed in a medically induced coma. His sister said part of his brain has been severely damaged and that he is not yet out of danger.

“He’s still highly sedated but he can hear us,” Kimberley said.

“He is connected to all the tubes but not on life support, which is a good thing.”

A HOLIDAY THAT WAS MEANT TO MAKE MEMORIES

The family holiday had carried special significance for Paul.

According to Kimberley, he had been struggling since suffering another seizure following a violent mugging in Newcastle several months earlier.

She said Paul was attacked and robbed of his wallet and phone before being taken to hospital.

“He hasn’t been the same since,” she said.

“That’s why this family holiday was so important to him.”

Paul had wanted the trip to be an opportunity for the family to spend time together and create happy memories.

Instead, his loved ones are now thousands of miles from home, waiting beside his hospital bed.

FAMILY LAUNCHES FUNDRAISING APPEAL

The sudden medical emergency has also left the family facing significant travel and accommodation costs.

Kimberley said the family had already spent more than £1,500 on flights and accommodation while trying to remain close to Paul in Gran Canaria.

She has launched a GoFundMe appeal to help cover those expenses as the family does not know how long they will need to remain in Spain.

The fundraiser had passed £4,000 when the family’s story was first reported and had risen above £5,000 in subsequent reports.

Kimberley said the family also remains uncertain about whether Paul has travel insurance and what medical costs may eventually arise.

“We’re just in the unknown at the moment,” she said.

“All we’re worried about is saving his life and getting him better.”

“HE JUST WANTED TO MAKE SOME NICE FAMILY MEMORIES”

For Paul’s loved ones, the sudden turn of events has been devastating.

Only hours earlier, the family had been enjoying the sunshine, swimming pool and dinner together.

Now they are waiting for signs of improvement as Paul remains heavily sedated in hospital.

“He just wanted to make some nice family memories and have a good time,” Kimberley said.

The family says the response from Paul’s friends and people who know him has been overwhelming.

“The amount of love and support we’ve received is amazing,” Kimberley said.

For now, Paul’s family remains by his side in Gran Canaria, hoping that the man who had travelled to Spain to create happy memories with them will eventually have the chance to return home.
