Kansas Man Says Routine Oil Change Left Him Feeling Humiliated After Disturbing Sticker Discovery

For nearly two months, Larry Martin drove his pickup truck around Wichita, Kansas, without realizing that something deeply offensive had been left in plain sight on his windshield.
The discovery did not come after Martin noticed the message himself. Instead, it began with an unexpected phone call from the dealership where he had taken the truck for what should have been an ordinary oil change.
Employees told him to look closely at the service sticker on his windshield.
When Martin did, he found a racial slur printed on it.
The moment transformed what he remembered as a routine visit into an experience he says has remained with him long after the service appointment ended.
“I just want to know why,” Martin said while describing the emotional impact of the incident.
A Routine Visit That Initially Raised No Concerns
Martin had brought his pickup truck to Rusty Eck Ford in Wichita roughly two months before the incident became public.
There appeared to be nothing unusual about the visit at the time.
His truck received an oil change, Martin paid for the service and then continued with his day. There was no confrontation, complaint or obvious indication that anything troubling had happened during the appointment.
That made the phone call he received weeks later even more unexpected.
According to Martin, the dealership contacted him approximately two weeks before he spoke publicly about the incident and explained that an employee was suspected of leaving derogatory messages on customers’ vehicles.
Martin was told his truck might have been one of them.
The allegation apparently extended beyond his vehicle. He said dealership representatives informed him that several customers may have been affected.
Martin then went to inspect the windshield himself.
There, on the sticker typically used to remind a driver when the next oil change is due, he found the n-word printed on the label.
His initial reaction was disbelief.
He looked at it more than once, struggling to accept that the message was actually there.
What might otherwise have been an insignificant service sticker had become something Martin said made him feel embarrassed and humiliated.
Years of Trust Made the Discovery More Painful
The incident also stunned Martin’s daughter, Kelsey Martin.
Her reaction was shaped in part by the history her father had with the dealership.
According to Kelsey, Larry had been going to Rusty Eck Ford for years and had developed what she considered a positive relationship with the business.
That history made the discovery difficult for the family to understand.
Kelsey initially questioned whether the situation could really have happened at a place her father had trusted for so long.
Once the details became clear, however, her disbelief turned to anger.
She described the conduct as inappropriate, inexcusable and disgusting.
For the Martin family, the issue was not simply that an offensive word appeared on a piece of paper.
It was also the setting in which it happened.
Larry had entered a familiar business expecting a basic vehicle service. He left without knowing that something insulting had allegedly been placed inside the truck he would continue driving every day.
And because he did not notice the sticker immediately, the message remained on the windshield until the dealership itself contacted him weeks later.
The Dealership Launches an Investigation
After becoming aware of concerns surrounding the alleged conduct, Rusty Eck Ford opened an internal investigation.
The dealership said it does not tolerate racial, hateful, discriminatory or otherwise inappropriate behavior in its workplace.
Following its investigation, the company terminated one employee.
The dealership also met with the Martin family to discuss what had happened.
Company representatives said the matter continued to be investigated internally and emphasized that the business was committed to maintaining an environment where customers and employees are treated with dignity and respect.
For Martin, however, the consequences of the incident have extended beyond the dealership’s personnel decision.
The truck itself is now a reminder of what happened.
He said the experience continues to affect him whenever he gets inside the vehicle.
The offensive message may have been found on a small sticker, but Martin said the meaning attached to it felt much larger.
“It carries a lot of weight,” he said, explaining that the incident left him feeling belittled.
His Daughter Says an Apology Cannot Erase the Experience
Kelsey has continued speaking on behalf of her father and expressing frustration over what he experienced.
From her perspective, a simple apology does not fully address the humiliation associated with discovering that the slur had been placed on his truck.
She said no one should have to experience that kind of treatment.
The family’s concern is especially personal because Larry was not walking into an unfamiliar business for the first time. He was a longtime customer who believed he had a good relationship with the dealership.
What remains especially difficult for Martin is the unanswered question behind the act.
Why was the message placed on his vehicle?
Why would an employee allegedly choose to target customers in such a personal way?
Those questions have lingered even after the employee was fired.
Martin has made clear that understanding the reason matters to him.
The dealership’s investigation may explain who was responsible internally, but for Martin, the emotional impact cannot necessarily be resolved by an employment decision.
An Ordinary Sticker Becomes a Lasting Reminder
Oil change stickers are designed to be forgettable.
They usually contain little more than mileage information or a date telling drivers when to return for routine maintenance.
For Martin, this one became impossible to ignore once he understood what had been printed on it.
The experience changed the way he viewed a transaction that had initially seemed completely normal.
He had driven away believing the job was finished. Weeks later, a call from the dealership forced him to revisit that day and discover something he never expected to find.
Rusty Eck Ford has said it took action after learning about the concerns, investigated the allegations, dismissed one employee and met with Martin’s family. The dealership has also said its internal review remains ongoing.
But Martin’s focus remains on something less procedural.
He wants to understand why it happened at all.
For a longtime customer who walked into a familiar dealership expecting nothing more than an oil change, that unanswered question has become the part of the experience that is hardest to leave behind.
