CANNON HALL FARM FACES HEARTBREAKING MONTHS AS YORKSHIRE VET HELPS SHIRE HORSES
Cannon Hall Farm has been facing an emotional period for its much-loved Shire horses, with the latest episode of The Yorkshire Vet following an important attempt to preserve the legacy of a stallion the Nicholson family described as a horse of a lifetime.
The South Yorkshire farm has endured a series of heartbreaking losses involving its Shire horses, while five young foals have also faced serious health challenges.
Now, the focus has turned to two mares — and the possibility that they could be carrying Herkules’ foals.
TWO MARES CARRY THE HOPE OF HERKULES’ LEGACY
In the September 17 episode of The Yorkshire Vet, veterinarian Shona Searson visited Cannon Hall Farm to scan two mares, Silver and Brooke.
The aim was to determine whether either mare could be carrying a foal by Herkules, the young Shire stallion who died after suffering from colic in June 2025.
The scans carried particular emotional significance for the Nicholson family.
Herkules had been regarded as an important part of the farm’s Shire breeding programme, and his unexpected death left the family facing the possibility that his bloodline could be lost.
The episode showed the veterinary team investigating whether Silver and Brooke might provide a continuation of his legacy.
HERKULES’ DEATH LEFT THE FARM DEVASTATED
Herkules died at only three years old after struggling to recover from colic.
Farmer Rob previously described the loss as devastating for the family, saying their hearts were filled with sadness after losing the young stallion.
His death followed the earlier loss of Lottie, a much-loved 19-hand Shire mare who was put to sleep in February 2022 after a sudden decline in her health.
More recently, another difficult decision came when Ruby the horse deteriorated and had to be euthanised.
Farmer Rob became emotional while explaining the decision, saying he could not in good conscience keep her going when she was suffering and relying on three legs.
FIVE SHIRE FOALS HAVE ALSO FACED A DIFFICULT START
Despite the losses, Cannon Hall Farm’s Shire story has also brought moments of hope.
The farm currently highlights five young Shire foals — Soldier, Iris, Athena, Captain and Major.
Two of the youngsters, Iris and Soldier, suffered serious complications and required specialist veterinary hospital care.
Both eventually returned home to the farm, where the team continues to care for them.
Cannon Hall Farm now offers a special Shire Foal Experience, allowing visitors to meet the five youngsters and hear the story behind their arrival and the challenges they have faced.
A SPECIAL EVENING WITH THE FARM’S EQUINE VET
The emotional story continued beyond the television episode.
On September 20, Cannon Hall Farm hosted an Evening Live with equine vet Marco, specifically reflecting on what the farm described as an “incredibly difficult few months” for its Shire horses.
The event was designed to discuss some of the veterinary challenges the team had faced, including the heartbreaking loss of horses.
The farm’s official website continues to feature the Shire horses prominently, showing how important the rare breed has become to the Cannon Hall Farm story.
FARMER RUTH’S FAMILY IS ALSO FACING A DIFFICULT TIME
Away from the animals, another deeply personal challenge has affected the wider Cannon Hall Farm community.
Farmer Ruth’s husband, Dave, has been diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer and is undergoing intensive treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
A fundraiser established to support Ruth, Dave and their two sons had raised £19,843 from more than 1,000 donations when recently viewed.
Ruth has publicly thanked supporters for their messages and donations as the family navigates the difficult period.
A FARM STORY FILLED WITH LOSS — AND HOPE
For viewers of The Yorkshire Vet, the scenes at Cannon Hall Farm are about more than a routine veterinary check.
Silver and Brooke’s scans represent a possibility that something could survive from a horse the family lost too soon.
At the same time, the farm continues caring for its five young Shires after a difficult start, while remembering the animals that are no longer there.
