BODY FOUND IN WATER AS SEARCH FOR MISSING 18-YEAR-OLD GEORGE ENDS IN HEARTBREAK

A desperate search for an 18-year-old man who disappeared from a seaside town has ended in heartbreak after police recovered a body from coastal waters near Newport, Wales.

George, from Portishead in Somerset, was last seen at around 8:20 p.m. on September 17, 2026, in the Woodlands Road and Pier Road area of Portishead.

Ten days later, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that a body had been recovered from water at a coastal location near Newport on Sunday morning, September 27.

Clothing found on the body matched what George was wearing when he was last seen.

However, police stressed that formal identification has not yet taken place. His family has been informed of the discovery and is being supported by a specially trained officer.

A TEN-DAY SEARCH FOR GEORGE

George disappeared after being in the area around the Royal Inn pub, off Pier Road, on the evening of September 17.

Police said he had been travelling on foot and had links to both Portishead and Clevedon.

At the time of his disappearance, George was described as white, approximately 5ft 7in tall, with short brown hair.

He was believed to be wearing a black Gymshark hoodie, black Gymshark jogging bottoms and grey-and-orange Yeezy Boost trainers.

He was also shown wearing a black baseball cap in footage released by police, although officers later confirmed that the cap had been located and they did not believe he was still wearing it.

Police initially warned that George might appear confused or disorientated and appealed urgently for anyone who had seen him to come forward.

EMERGENCY TEAMS JOINED THE SEARCH

The disappearance triggered an extensive search operation involving multiple emergency services.

Police officers were joined by fire crews, Coastguard teams, RNLI personnel, the National Police Air Service, specialist search officers, drone teams and search dogs.

Searches focused on the area around Woodlands Road and the beach where George was last seen, as well as surrounding locations.

Officers also conducted CCTV checks and house-to-house inquiries.

Members of the public joined the effort, with some people searching day and night in an attempt to find the missing teenager.

But despite the searches, there was no confirmed sighting of George.

POLICE WARNED SEARCHERS NOT TO TAKE RISKS

As the search continued, investigators repeatedly urged members of the public not to put themselves in danger.

The area around Portishead includes mud, rocky terrain and locations at height, creating significant risks for people attempting independent searches.

Detective Chief Inspector James Wasiak thanked members of the public who had helped and said information from people who had been in the area could help investigators make searches more targeted.

In a statement released through police, they said they continued to appeal for information that could bring their son home and asked the public to respect their privacy during what they described as an incredibly difficult time.
