BABY LUNA CASE — NEW DETAILS EMERGE AS MOTHER FACES MURDER CHARGES

A heartbreaking case in South Los Angeles has taken a major turn after the mother of 4-month-old Luna Babers was formally charged following the discovery of the infant inside a dumpster.

Luna was found late Monday night near the Pueblo Del Rio housing complex after a woman taking out the trash discovered what she initially believed was a doll inside a black cloth bag.

When she realized it was a baby, she and another resident immediately called 911.

Firefighters rushed Luna to a hospital, but she was pronounced dead. Authorities are investigating her death as a homicide.

Luna had been cared for by her grandparents, Laura Lacy and Herman Johnson, who described their granddaughter as a deeply loved baby.

The couple had reportedly dropped Luna off at the apartment where her mother, 19-year-old Takiyah Babers, had been staying on Monday evening.

Hours later, they learned that an infant had been found in a nearby dumpster.

They rushed back to the neighborhood, desperately trying to find Luna.

Then came the devastating confirmation.

Lacy later told reporters that she could not understand how the baby she had cared for could be gone.

“I just miss my baby. I miss my grandbaby.”

A community vigil was held soon afterward, with candles, flowers and balloons placed near the location where Luna was found.

MOTHER NOW FACES TWO FELONY COUNTS

Babers was initially arrested on suspicion of murder after investigators questioned her in connection with Luna’s death.

On October 1, prosecutors formally charged her with one count of murder and one felony count of assault on a child causing death.

She is being held on $2 million bail.

Her initial arraignment was postponed, and her next court date is scheduled for October 30. According to the Los Angeles Times, Babers has not entered a plea.

The charges are allegations, and Babers is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The case has raised disturbing questions about the final hours of Luna’s life.

The Los Angeles Times reported that an advocate for Luna’s caregivers said apartment security footage allegedly showed Babers carrying the baby’s body toward the dumpster.

The advocate also said Ring camera footage may show events inside the apartment shortly after Luna was dropped off.

A law-enforcement source cited by the newspaper said the account was accurate.

However, investigators have not publicly released the full evidence, and the circumstances surrounding Luna’s death remain part of the ongoing investigation.

THE CAUSE OF DEATH HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED

Despite the murder charge, authorities have not publicly disclosed Luna’s cause of death.

That detail remains important as investigators continue reconstructing what happened before the baby was discovered.

The LAPD and prosecutors have not publicly provided a complete timeline of the events leading to Luna’s death.

A COMMUNITY LEFT HEARTBROKEN

The tragedy has shaken the South Los Angeles neighborhood.

At the vigil, family members struggled to put their grief into words.

Candles illuminated the makeshift memorial as neighbors gathered to remember a baby whose life lasted only four months.

For Laura Lacy and Herman Johnson, the loss has left an enormous emptiness.

And as the criminal case moves toward its next court hearing, Luna’s family is still waiting for answers about what happened to the little girl they loved.

The investigation remains ongoing, with Babers’ next court appearance scheduled for October 30.
