BABY LUNA’S LIFE ENDS IN HEARTBREAKING TRAGEDY AS HER MOTHER FACES MURDER CHARGE
A four-month-old baby should have been surrounded by love, safety and protection.
Instead, little Luna Babers became the center of a heartbreaking investigation after she was found unresponsive inside a dumpster in South Los Angeles — a discovery that has left her family and community devastated.
Luna was found at around 10:30 p.m. on September 28, near Alba Street and Long Beach Avenue, outside the Pueblo Del Rio housing complex. A woman who was taking out trash reportedly noticed a black bag inside the dumpster and initially believed she was looking at a doll. After realizing it was a baby, she and another person called 911.
Emergency crews rushed Luna to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities began investigating the case as a homicide.
A FAMILY LEFT HEARTBROKEN
Luna had been cared for by her foster grandparents, Laura Lacy and Herman Johnson, who said they had been raising the little girl for the first four months of her life.
The couple said they had dropped Luna off with her biological mother, 19-year-old Takiyah Babers, on the evening before the discovery.
When they later learned that a baby had been found in a dumpster near the apartment complex, they rushed back to the area.
The news that the child had died left them devastated.
Lacy described Luna as a precious baby who brought joy into their home, while Johnson spoke about the enormous emptiness left behind by her death.
A candlelight vigil was later held near the location where Luna was discovered. Flowers, balloons and candles were placed in her memory as members of the community gathered to mourn the little girl.
MOTHER ARRESTED AND CHARGED
LAPD identified Takiyah Babers as Luna’s biological mother and arrested her in connection with the investigation.
The case has since moved forward in court.
On October 1, prosecutors charged Babers with one count of murder and one felony count of assault on a child causing death, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Her arraignment was postponed, and her next court date is scheduled for October 30.
She is being held on $2 million bail.
Babers has not been convicted, and the allegations against her must still be resolved through the court process.
INVESTIGATORS CONTINUE TO SEARCH FOR ANSWERS
The circumstances surrounding Luna’s final hours remain the subject of an active investigation.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a cause of death.
Investigators are continuing to examine what happened after Luna was dropped off at the apartment and before she was discovered in the dumpster later that night.
The case has also raised painful questions for those who cared for Luna.
Her foster grandparents have said they are struggling to understand how a child they had cared for and loved could be gone so suddenly.
For the community, the little girl’s death has become a heartbreaking reminder of how vulnerable a child can be.
“SHE DESERVED A LIFE”
Luna’s family now faces the loss of a child who was only four months old.
Those who knew her remember a baby with a beautiful smile and a presence that brought happiness into their home.
Instead of watching Luna grow up, her loved ones are now left with photographs, memories and unanswered questions.
As the legal case against her mother moves forward, investigators continue working to establish exactly what happened.
For Luna’s grandparents and everyone who gathered to remember her, the tragedy is not simply a headline.
It is the loss of a little girl they loved.
Luna was only four months old. Her family says she was a sweet baby with a beautiful smile — and now they are left grieving the future she never had.
