WADE WILSON: WHERE THE “DEADPOOL KILLER” CASE STANDS IN 2026

Wade Steven Wilson remains on Florida’s death row more than two years after a jury convicted him of murdering two women in Fort Myers.

The case has continued to attract intense public attention, especially after Wilson’s story was featured in Netflix’s Worst Ex Ever and the Paramount+ documentary Handsome Devil: Charming Killer.

Despite being sentenced to death, Wilson does not currently have an execution date.

TWO WOMEN KILLED IN ONE DAY

The crimes occurred on October 7, 2019, in Lee County, Florida.

Wilson was convicted of killing Kristine Melton, 35, and Diane Ruiz, 43, on the same day.

According to evidence presented at trial, Wilson met Melton at a Fort Myers bar before going with her to her home. Prosecutors said he later killed her and took her vehicle.

Later that morning, Wilson encountered Ruiz, who was walking to work. Investigators said he persuaded her to get into the vehicle before killing her.

Wilson was arrested less than a day after the killings after making admissions about the crimes to his biological father, who contacted law enforcement.

A Lee County jury convicted Wilson of two counts of first-degree murder in June 2024.

In August 2024, he was sentenced to death for both killings.

The jury recommendations were not unanimous. Jurors voted 9-3 for death in the Melton case and 10-2 in the Ruiz case. Under Florida’s law at the time, a death sentence could be imposed when at least eight jurors recommended it.

Wilson’s appeal focuses on the legality of his death sentences rather than challenging the underlying murder convictions, according to his attorneys.

Wilson is currently incarcerated at Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Florida, which houses the state’s male death-row prisoners.

His case is before the Florida Supreme Court under case number SC2024-1345.

The court’s official docket shows the case remains open. It also records oral arguments held on February 5, 2026, as well as subsequent filings and a May 2026 order allowing one of Wilson’s attorneys to withdraw from the case.

His legal team has indicated that, if necessary, they intend to continue pursuing the case beyond the Florida Supreme Court and potentially seek review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

NO EXECUTION DATE HAS BEEN SET

For people following the case, one of the biggest questions is when Wilson will be executed.

There is currently no scheduled execution date.

His death sentence remains subject to the appeals process, meaning the legal proceedings must continue before an execution could take place.

That means Wilson remains on death row while his attorneys challenge the sentence.

WHY IS HE CALLED THE “DEADPOOL KILLER”?

Wilson became known online as the “Deadpool Killer” because his name is the same as the Marvel character played by Ryan Reynolds.

The nickname became widely used in media coverage and online discussions surrounding the case.

Interest in Wilson increased again in 2026 after his case appeared in Netflix’s second season of Worst Ex Ever. Paramount+ also released Handsome Devil: Charming Killer, bringing renewed attention to the case and the legal proceedings surrounding his death sentence.

WHERE WADE WILSON IS NOW

As of 2026, Wilson remains incarcerated on Florida’s death row.

He has been sentenced to death for the murders of Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz, but his execution has not been scheduled.
