NEWBORN BABY MARIA SKOPOVA NAMED AS INQUEST REVEALS NEW DETAILS IN SHEFFIELD CASE

NEWBORN BABY MARIA SKOPOVA NAMED AS INQUEST REVEALS NEW DETAILS IN SHEFFIELD CASE
A newborn baby girl whose death shocked a Sheffield community has been identified as Maria Skopova, as an inquest heard new details about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Maria was born on August 30, 2026, in the Wincobank area of Sheffield, England.
She died on the same day.
Police were called after concerns were raised about the safety of a newborn baby. Officers attended a property in the Holywell Heights area, where the baby was eventually found.
Despite efforts by emergency services, Maria was pronounced dead at the scene.
A forensic post-mortem examination later confirmed that her cause of death was stab wounds.
INQUEST HEARS DETAILS OF THE BABY’S FINAL HOURS
At the opening of Maria’s inquest, the coroner heard that the newborn had suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stabbing incidents.
The court heard that Maria had been born at approximately 37 weeks’ gestation.
Her mother, Andrea Skopova, 20, later went to hospital after giving birth, where medical staff became concerned and contacted police.
Officers then attended the relevant addresses as they attempted to establish what had happened to the newborn.
Maria was ultimately discovered at an outhouse at the Holywell Heights property.
Because criminal proceedings are now underway, the inquest has been adjourned until March 25, 2027.
The coroner has indicated that the ongoing criminal case limits what can be discussed publicly at this stage.
FOUR ADULTS FACE MURDER CHARGES
Four adults have been charged in connection with Maria’s death.
They are:
- Andrea Skopova, 20
- Peter Horvath Jr., 19
- Peter Horvath Sr., 38
- Nina Horvathova, 37
All four face charges including murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and perverting the course of justice.
A 15-year-old girl, who cannot legally be named, has separately been charged with perverting the course of justice.
Two other women, aged 26 and 37, were initially arrested on suspicion of murder but were later released on bail while the investigation continued.
TRIAL EXPECTED TO BEGIN IN APRIL 2027
The four adult defendants are due to face trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
The trial is scheduled to begin on April 12, 2027, and is expected to last approximately six to seven weeks.
The defendants have been remanded in custody while the criminal proceedings continue.
South Yorkshire Police have continued to urge the public not to speculate about the case or share potentially prejudicial information online.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward said the investigation has been complex and emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the criminal justice process.
A COMMUNITY LEFT HEARTBROKEN
Flowers have been left near the property in Holywell Heights as people in the community mourned the death of a baby who had only just entered the world.
Police officers, paramedics and detectives involved in the response have also been affected by the circumstances of the case.
Authorities have described the investigation as deeply distressing and have said their focus remains on establishing the full circumstances surrounding Maria’s death.
For now, her family and the wider community must wait as the legal process continues.
Maria was only hours old.
Her name is now known, but many questions surrounding the final moments of her short life remain to be answered in court.
