25-YEAR-OLD LEIRE SAN PEDRO DIES AFTER BULL CHARGES THROUGH BARRIER AT SPANISH FESTIVAL
A YOUNG WOMAN FROM BILBAO HAS DIED AFTER SUFFERING A DEVASTATING HEAD INJURY WHEN A BULL BROKE THROUGH A BARRIER DURING A TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL IN NORTHERN SPAIN.
Leire San Pedro was only 25.
A passionate supporter of the traditional bull-running events in Lodosa, Spain, she had attended the festival before and was a member of the Peña Lodosa por el Toro group.
But on September 27, a moment during the traditional Toro con Soga event changed everything.
Days later, Leire died in hospital, leaving her family, friends and the community of Lodosa devastated.
THE BULL BROKE THROUGH THE BARRIER
The incident happened in Lodosa, Navarra, during the traditional Toro con Soga event.
In this tradition, a bull is released onto the streets with a long rope attached to its horns, allowing handlers to control its movements.
According to local reports, the bull unexpectedly entered a narrow passage between a wooden barrier and temporary spectator stands.
Leire was in the area when the animal charged through.
She suffered a severe head injury after being struck and was urgently taken for medical treatment.
FIVE DAYS IN INTENSIVE CARE
Leire was initially treated at a health centre in Lodosa before being transferred to the Hospital Universitario de Navarra in Pamplona.
She remained in intensive care for five days.
Doctors treated her for a severe traumatic brain injury, but her condition was critical.
On October 2, Leire died at the hospital.
SHE WAS MORE THAN A NAME IN THE HEADLINES
Leire was from Bilbao and also had close connections to Laguardia in Álava.
She was a passionate supporter of bull-related traditions and belonged to several local associations, including Peña Lodosa por el Toro.
Friends remembered her for the happiness and energy she brought to the people around her.
Her death was particularly devastating for the community because she had been closely connected to the festival she attended.
LODOSA DECLARES TWO DAYS OF MOURNING
Following Leire’s death, Lodosa declared two days of official mourning.
The town hall expressed its condolences and solidarity with her family, friends and loved ones.
Flags were lowered as the community prepared to say goodbye to a young woman whose life had ended so unexpectedly.
A THOUSAND PEOPLE COME TO REMEMBER HER
On October 4, around 1,000 people gathered in Lodosa for a tribute to Leire.
Members of her bullfighting club, local officials, friends and residents gathered with flowers and black ribbons to remember her.
A minute of silence was held in her honour.
For those who knew her, the gathering was not simply about mourning her death — it was about remembering the joy, laughter and friendship she brought into their lives.
A TRADITION NOW MARKED BY TRAGEDY
The Toro con Soga remains an important traditional event in Lodosa, taking place during the town’s festivities.
But Leire’s death has left a painful mark on this year’s celebrations.
Her family and friends are now left with memories of a 25-year-old woman whose life ended in a moment of unimaginable tragedy.
REMEMBERED FOR HER JOY
Leire’s story is now being remembered not only because of the accident, but because of the person she was.
Her friends described someone capable of bringing energy and happiness into every moment they shared.
At the memorial, the message was clear: her time may have been far too short, but the impression she left on those around her will remain.
Leire San Pedro was only 25 — a young woman with a passion for life, friends who loved her and a future that should have stretched far beyond this tragic day.
