TOM JONES’ VOICE EXIT SPARKS FAN REVOLT — WILL.I.AM JOINS CALLS TO BRING THE LEGEND BACK
After 13 years in the iconic red chair, the Welsh music legend says he did not want to leave — and now thousands of fans are demanding his return
Sir Tom Jones has spent more than a decade sitting in one of the most recognisable chairs on British television.
Now, his unexpected departure from The Voice UK has turned into one of the show’s biggest controversies.
The 86-year-old Welsh music legend has made clear that he did not choose to leave the programme.
And the reaction from fans has been swift.
A petition calling for Tom to return has attracted tens of thousands of signatures, while his longtime fellow coach will.i.am has publicly backed the campaign.
“I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE”
Tom Jones first joined The Voice UK when the programme launched in 2012.
Apart from one season, he remained part of the coaching line-up throughout the show’s run, becoming one of its most familiar faces.
So when ITV announced a major overhaul of the programme, many viewers were shocked to learn that Tom would no longer have a full-time coaching role.
Tom himself was even more direct.
He said ITV had made the decision and that he had only been informed relatively recently.
According to Tom, he was offered a significantly reduced role in which he would make appearances rather than participate fully from the beginning of the competition.
That was not what he wanted.
He made clear that he loved the programme and appreciated its audience — but did not want to simply appear briefly on the sidelines.
ITV SAYS THE SHOW IS BEING REFRESHED
ITV has presented the changes differently.
Rather than describing Tom’s departure as simply a dismissal, the broadcaster has emphasised its plans to refresh The Voice UK with a new coaching line-up.
Cheryl and rapper Aitch have joined returning coaches will.i.am and Kelly Rowland for the next series.
Meanwhile, Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon are taking over presenting duties from Emma Willis.
ITV has also praised Tom for the years he spent on the programme, thanking him for the “countless incredible and unforgettable moments” he brought to the show.
But for many viewers, that explanation has not ended the debate.
WILL.I.AM JOINS THE CAMPAIGN
Perhaps the most striking reaction has come from someone who knows Tom particularly well.
will.i.am, who has worked alongside Tom since the early days of The Voice UK, backed an online petition calling for the veteran singer to be reinstated.
The petition was started by fan Aaron Howlett and quickly attracted support from around the world.
By late September, it had collected more than 63,000 signatures.
For fans, the campaign is about more than nostalgia.
Tom has been part of the identity of The Voice UK since its beginning, and viewers have watched him mentor singers, turn his chair and compete alongside generations of coaches.
One supporter told the BBC that Tom was the reason many people watched the programme and suggested they might stop watching if he was not there.
A NEW ERA FOR THE VOICE
The controversy comes as the programme undergoes one of its biggest changes.
Tom is not the only long-standing coach leaving.
McFly’s Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher are also departing, while Cheryl and Aitch are joining the returning will.i.am and Kelly Rowland.
The show is therefore entering a completely new era.
And there is even a reported change to the Blind Audition format.
The familiar Rewind button is reportedly being replaced by a new “Lockdown” feature, which could allow a coach to immediately claim a singer after all four coaches turn their chairs.
For longtime viewers, it means that almost everything surrounding the famous red chairs is about to feel different.
TOM’S LEGACY IS ALREADY PART OF THE SHOW
Whatever happens next, Tom Jones’ place in The Voice UK history is secure.
He was there at the beginning.
He returned repeatedly.
And over the years, he became more than just another coach.
For an entire generation of viewers, his presence was synonymous with the programme itself.
He also helped mentor several contestants who went on to win the competition.
Now, at 86, he finds himself at the centre of a campaign asking ITV to reconsider its decision.
Whether that campaign can actually bring him back remains uncertain.
“NEVER A GOOD TIME TO FIRE AN 86-YEAR-OLD”
Tom’s departure has produced a mixture of sadness, anger and disbelief among viewers.
But perhaps the most striking part is that the singer himself has not presented the situation as a retirement.
He has repeatedly made clear that he still wanted to be part of the show.
That distinction matters.
Because after more than a decade in the red chair, Tom Jones did not appear ready to close the door on The Voice UK.
Instead, the door was closed for him.
And now, thousands of fans — joined publicly by his former coaching partner will.i.am — are asking whether it should be opened again.
For the moment, The Voice UK is moving forward with a new line-up.
But one thing is clear:
The audience is not quite ready to say goodbye to Sir Tom Jones. 💙
