22-YEAR-OLD MAN CHARGED WITH DOUBLE MURDER AFTER DEADLY EDENDERRY HOUSE FIRE
MICHAEL DUNNE APPEARED IN COURT OVER THE DEATHS OF FOUR-YEAR-OLD TADGH FARRELL AND HIS 60-YEAR-OLD GRANDAUNT MARY HOLT
A 22-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murders of a four-year-old boy and his grandaunt following a devastating house fire in Edenderry, Co Offaly.
Michael Dunne, who has an address in Co Kildare, appeared before Tullamore District Court on Wednesday, October 7, in connection with the deaths of little Tadgh Farrell and 60-year-old Mary Holt.
The two victims died after a fire at a house in Castleview Park on December 6, 2025.
Dunne was previously in custody after being charged with criminal damage by arson and endangerment. He now faces additional charges arising from the same incident.
TWO LIVES LOST IN THE BLAZE
The tragedy unfolded on the evening of December 6 last year.
Emergency services were called to a house in Castleview Park shortly before 7:45 p.m. after a fire broke out.
When the blaze was extinguished, Gardaí discovered the bodies of a 60-year-old woman and a four-year-old boy inside the property.
A second woman, who was in her 50s, was also found seriously injured and was taken to hospital.
Gardaí immediately began a murder investigation and said at the time that they believed the house had been deliberately attacked and the fire intentionally started.
The four-year-old victim was identified as Tadgh Farrell.
Mary Holt, Tadgh’s grandaunt, was the second person who died in the fire.
Tadgh had reportedly been visiting his grandmother and grandaunt when the tragedy occurred.
His grandmother, Pauline Holt, survived but suffered serious injuries and required lengthy medical treatment.
NEW MURDER CHARGES
At Wednesday’s hearing, Detective Garda Tom Dunne gave evidence that he formally charged Michael Dunne with the murders of Tadgh Farrell and Mary Holt.
The accused made no reply when the charges were put to him.
He was also charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Pauline Holt.
In addition, the existing endangerment charge was amended.
The amended allegation states that Dunne broke the front window of the property and intentionally caused a fire that created a substantial risk of death or serious harm to four named people.
These are allegations before the court and have not been proven at trial.
GARDAÍ ALLEGE THE FIRE WAS DELIBERATELY STARTED
The Garda investigation began immediately after the fatal blaze.
In an update issued shortly after the fire, An Garda Síochána said investigators believed the house had been attacked by one or more people and that the fire had been deliberately started.
The Gardaí described the incident at the time as a “reckless” and “callous” attack on a family home.
The house was declared a crime scene and underwent technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.
The State Pathologist and local coroner were also notified, with post-mortem examinations carried out on the two people who died.
A LOCAL FEUD WAS ALSO MENTIONED IN COURT
The case has previously been linked in court reports to what was described as a serious and dangerous local feud.
When Dunne first appeared in court in May, the proceedings heard references to a “very contentious, dangerous, local feud.”
However, the full circumstances surrounding the alleged motive remain matters for the investigation and prosecution.
Several other people have been arrested during the wider investigation, including a teenage boy.
Gardaí have continued to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack, with officers from Tullamore Garda Station assisted by the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
DUNNE HAS REMAINED IN CUSTODY
Dunne has been in custody since he was first charged approximately five months ago.
Because the new charges include murder, the District Court cannot grant bail on the murder allegations.
Any formal application for bail would therefore have to be made before the High Court.
There was no bail application at Wednesday’s hearing.
Dunne was remanded in custody and is due to appear by video link next week.
He is scheduled to return to court on October 28, when the book of evidence is expected to be served.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case proceed by trial on indictment.
A FAMILY LEFT DEVASTATED
For Tadgh’s family, the case represents another painful stage in a tragedy that began nearly a year ago.
A four-year-old child lost his life alongside his grandaunt inside the family home.
His grandmother survived the fire but suffered severe injuries.
The circumstances of the tragedy have continued to draw attention in Edenderry as investigators work to establish exactly what happened that night.
The Garda investigation remains active.
THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Gardaí previously appealed to anyone who was in or around Castleview Park between approximately 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on December 6, 2025, to come forward.
They also sought motorists who may have been travelling through the area and could have captured relevant images or dashcam footage.
The investigation has involved a number of arrests and remains ongoing.
The latest court appearance marks a significant development because the investigation has now resulted in formal murder charges against Dunne.
However, a charge is not a conviction.
Michael Dunne remains legally presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
For now, the families of Tadgh Farrell and Mary Holt continue to wait for the full legal process to unfold, while investigators and prosecutors work toward establishing the evidence surrounding the fatal Edenderry fire.
