THE LAST NIGHT: ROYAL FAMILY GP’S FINAL HOURS REVEALED AS HUSBAND FACES MURDER CHARGE
Dr Hannah Cain, 45, was found unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom at her Norfolk home during a children’s sleepover. Her husband, Mark Cain, has been charged with her murder after a court heard allegations about fatal head and neck injuries.
A family home near the royal residence of Sandringham has become the centre of a deeply distressing criminal case after a respected general practitioner was found dead while children were staying overnight at the property.
Dr Hannah Cain, known professionally to her patients as Dr Hannah Terry, was discovered unresponsive at her home in Dersingham, Norfolk, in the early hours of Sunday, October 4, 2026.
Her husband, Mark Cain, 45, has been charged with her murder. Prosecutors have since outlined allegations about the circumstances surrounding her death during court proceedings.
The case has attracted national attention not only because of the circumstances of Hannah’s death, but also because she was part of a group of doctors available to provide medical care to members of the Royal Family when they stayed at nearby Sandringham.
THE EARLY-MORNING CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Some of the first details about Hannah’s final hours emerged during proceedings at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on October 7.
Prosecutor Jacqui Hanlon told the court that the ambulance service contacted police at approximately 2:25 a.m. on October 4.
Hannah was subsequently found in an upstairs bedroom at the family property. The court heard that she was “not breathing, not conscious” when emergency services attended.
A post-mortem examination identified a blunt-force injury to the right side of her head, along with an injury that could indicate compression of the neck.
The findings prompted a murder investigation, and Mark Cain was subsequently charged.
WHAT THE COURT HEARD ABOUT THE ALLEGED ATTACK
At King’s Lynn Crown Court on October 8, prosecutor Steven Ball outlined further allegations concerning the events at the family home.
The court heard that Hannah’s husband is accused of murdering her between October 3 and the early hours of October 4.
According to reports of the hearing, the prosecution alleges that Hannah was struck on the head with an axe and strangled.
These are allegations presented by the prosecution, not findings established by a trial. The evidence will need to be tested through the legal process before a jury can determine whether the charge is proved.
FIVE CHILDREN WERE AT THE HOUSE
One of the most upsetting details to emerge from the proceedings was that children were present in the property during the period in question.
The court heard that Hannah and Mark had three children, aged eight, 11 and 13, who were upstairs. Two other children, aged eight and 10, were reportedly staying overnight for a sleepover.
The presence of the children has added to the emotional impact of the case, although the court reports do not establish that any of them witnessed the alleged events.
The family’s private grief has unfolded alongside the investigation and the early stages of the criminal proceedings. <
A DOCTOR WHO SERVED HER COMMUNITY — AND THE ROYAL FAMILY
Away from the courtroom, Hannah is being remembered for her work as a doctor and her commitment to her patients.
She was a member of the team at Grimston Medical Centre and had also worked at Heacham Medical Practice. Information published by her aesthetics business stated that she had been a qualified doctor for more than 15 years and had worked as a GP for eight years.
Hannah was also part of a pool of doctors regularly available to care for members of the Royal Family when they stayed at the nearby Sandringham Estate. Her professional connection to the royal household has brought additional public attention to the case.
Her family described her as “kind, generous and loving” and praised the care she gave to her patients.
Those words offer a glimpse of the person remembered by her loved ones and the local community, beyond the disturbing allegations now being examined in court.
HER HUSBAND REMAINS IN CUSTODY
Mark Cain appeared before Norwich Magistrates’ Court on October 7 and subsequently appeared by video link from prison at King’s Lynn Crown Court the following day.
He confirmed his identity but was not asked to enter a plea at the Crown Court hearing. He was remanded in custody until a plea hearing provisionally scheduled for December 3.
The charge against him remains an allegation, and he has not been convicted. The criminal proceedings will determine the evidence and the circumstances surrounding Hannah’s death.
A FAMILY’S LOSS BEYOND THE HEADLINES
For Hannah’s family, friends, patients and colleagues, the case is about much more than the headlines surrounding her royal connection or the allegations made in court.
It is the loss of a mother, a wife, a daughter and a doctor whose work touched the lives of people in her community.
As the legal process continues, many questions about the events of that night remain to be answered. The court proceedings will examine the prosecution’s allegations, while Hannah’s loved ones continue to grieve.
For now, the case remains before the courts, and the allegations against Mark Cain have yet to be determined at trial.
Hannah’s life and the care she gave to others remain central to the tributes being paid to her, even as the investigation into her final hours continues.
