“THE FAMILY HAVE SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS” — WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S TIGER ATTACK INQUEST REVEALS CONCERNS ABOUT HIS MENTAL HEALTH CARE

“THE FAMILY HAVE SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS” — WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S TIGER ATTACK INQUEST REVEALS CONCERNS ABOUT HIS MENTAL HEALTH CARE
The family of 24-year-old William Chapman are struggling to come to terms with his death at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. As an inquest opens, serious concerns have been raised about his contact with mental health services in the months and years before the tragedy.
The death of William Chapman, a young man killed by a tiger after entering its enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, has left his family devastated and searching for answers.
William died on October 10, 2026, after entering the enclosure occupied by an Amur tiger named Altai. An initial post-mortem examination found that he had suffered multiple traumatic injuries.
At the opening of the inquest on October 15, the hearing was told that William had a history of mental illness, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia and previous episodes of psychosis.
His family have now raised concerns about his contact with mental health services before his death, prompting further questions as separate investigations continue.
His family want answers about the support he received
According to information presented at the inquest, William was under the care of adult mental health services in Doncaster. He was described during the hearing as highly functioning and independent, with no care requirements.
His relatives have expressed concerns about his contact with those services in the period leading up to his death.
In a statement shared after the tragedy, the family described William as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” who was deeply loved by those closest to him.
They also said he had experienced significant mental illness over several years and had been prescribed strong medication.
The family stressed that it would be for the coroner to determine what role, if any, these circumstances played in his death. Their concerns do not, by themselves, establish that any failure in care occurred.
The NHS trust responsible for his mental health services has launched a patient safety investigation.
What happened at Yorkshire Wildlife Park?
The inquest heard that William visited the wildlife park on October 10 and entered the tiger enclosure at approximately 1:30 p.m. after climbing over two fences.
He was approached by Altai, and the ensuing physical contact resulted in injuries that rapidly led to his death. Emergency services attended, but William was pronounced dead at the scene.
The park, police and local authorities are cooperating with investigations into the circumstances of the incident. A separate health and safety investigation is also being conducted by City of Doncaster Council, which is responsible for licensing the attraction.
The coroner has adjourned the inquest, with a full hearing scheduled for March 18, 2027.
His family are asking for privacy
Alongside their questions about the circumstances leading up to William’s death, his relatives have spoken out about distressing footage of the incident circulating online.
They said the publication and sharing of such material was causing them severe distress during an exceptionally painful period. They have asked the public to stop sharing the footage and to respect their privacy.
William had appeared in television productions as a child and attended Jackie Palmer Stage School in Buckinghamshire. The school also paid tribute to its former student, remembering him with affection.
For his family, however, the most important thing is not the attention surrounding the incident, but remembering the person they knew and loved.
More questions remain unanswered
The opening of the inquest has brought new information into the public record, but it has not yet established all the circumstances surrounding William’s death.
The coroner will consider the available evidence, while the separate health and safety and patient safety investigations continue.
His family are left grieving a young man they described as bright, warm and engaging, while hoping that the investigations will provide a clearer understanding of what happened.
William Chapman’s death has left a family heartbroken. As they wait for answers, they are asking for compassion, privacy and a careful examination of the circumstances leading up to the tragedy.
