AUTOPSY DEEPENS MYSTERY OF LOS ALAMOS LAB WORKER FOUND DEAD WITH GUNSHOT WOUND — MANNER OF DEATH STILL UNDETERMINED
TAOS, NEW MEXICO — Nearly a year after Melissa Casias disappeared without a trace, a newly released autopsy has answered one question — but left the most important one unanswered.
The Los Alamos National Laboratory employee died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
But investigators could not determine whether the shooting was suicide, homicide, an accident or another manner of death.
Her official manner of death remains undetermined.
SHE VANISHED IN JUNE 2025
Casias, 54, disappeared in June 2025 after working at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Her daughter reported her missing after discovering that her mother’s phones, wallet, identification and laptop were still at her home, while Melissa was nowhere to be found.
For nearly a year, her family had no definitive answers.
Then, in late May 2026, a hiker discovered human remains in a remote area of northern New Mexico.
Dental comparisons were eventually used to identify the remains as Casias.
THE CONDITION OF THE REMAINS CREATED A MAJOR PROBLEM
By the time Casias was found, her remains were in an advanced state of decomposition.
That severely limited what medical investigators could determine.
The autopsy established the fatal gunshot wound but could not reliably determine several other details, including the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
As a result, officials stopped short of classifying the death as a suicide or homicide.
That distinction is crucial.
An undetermined manner of death does not mean investigators have concluded that someone else killed Casias.
It means the available evidence was insufficient for the medical examiner to make that determination.
A FAMILY STILL DOESN’T BELIEVE THE STORY IS OVER
Casias’ family has continued to question what happened to her.
Relatives have publicly said they do not believe Melissa died by suicide and have called for a more thorough investigation.
But authorities have not publicly determined that foul play occurred, and no individual has been publicly identified as responsible for her death.
That leaves investigators facing a difficult question:
How did Melissa Casias end up alone in a remote forest with a fatal gunshot wound nearly a year after she disappeared?
WHY THE CASE HAS ATTRACTED SO MUCH ATTENTION
Casias worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, one of the most sensitive scientific facilities in the United States.
The laboratory has a long history connected to nuclear research and national-security work, adding an unusual backdrop to an already mysterious disappearance.
But there is currently no established evidence showing that Casias’ employment was connected to her death.
The facts that investigators can confirm are stark:
She disappeared.
Her remains were found months later.
She suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
And after the autopsy, officials still could not determine exactly how or why she died.
THE BIGGEST QUESTION REMAINS
For Casias’ family, the discovery of her remains brought an answer to one terrible question — but created several more.
They finally know where Melissa’s story ended.
They still do not know what happened in the moments before it did.
Until investigators can determine how the gunshot occurred and what led Casias to that remote location, the case remains shrouded in uncertainty.
A missing laboratory worker. A remote forest. A fatal gunshot. And an autopsy that could not say whether her death was self-inflicted or caused by someone else.
For Melissa Casias’ loved ones, the mystery is far from over. 💔
The official manner of death remains undetermined. Authorities have not publicly established that Casias was the victim of a homicide, and the investigation remains ongoing.
