“HE WAS TRULY A GREAT KID” — 15-YEAR-OLD DAVION FEWELL REMEMBERED AFTER TRAGIC FOOTBALL GAME INJURY

A Friday night football game in Greensboro, North Carolina, turned into heartbreak for a high school community after 15-year-old Davion Fewell suffered an injury on the field and died days later.

Fewell, a student and junior varsity football player at Page High School, was injured during a home game against rival Grimsley High School on Thursday, Sept. 10.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment and died on Sunday, Sept. 13, according to his family and local reports.

THE MOMENT THE GAME CHANGED

The game had only been underway for a few minutes when Fewell was injured.

Emergency personnel responded at the stadium, and he was transported to a local hospital.

School officials have not publicly disclosed the exact nature of his injury or his medical condition.

Guilford County Schools said the student received immediate medical attention from trained personnel at the scene before being taken to the hospital.

The district has declined to provide further medical details, citing the family’s privacy.

HIS DEATH SHOCKED THE COMMUNITY

News of Fewell’s death spread through Page High School and the wider Greensboro community.

The Page Pirates football program described him as “a great kid” and asked supporters to keep his family, teammates, friends and staff in their thoughts.

Students and community members have since shared memories of the teenager, describing him as someone who had made an impression both on and off the field.

One parent told WFMY that she learned from students that Fewell was a strong and fearless player who had a big heart.

QUESTIONS REMAIN ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED

As the community mourns, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the injury.

Local reporting says an investigation is underway, while the National Federation of State High School Associations said it could not comment on the specific incident because it remains under investigation.

The NFHS does not investigate individual games or injuries. It said its sports medicine committee routinely reviews serious incidents and safety practices in high school athletics.

Officials have not announced a specific cause of death.

A STADIUM FILLED WITH MEMORIES

On Thursday, Sept. 17, Page High School held a candlelight vigil at the football stadium to honor Davion.

Students, families, teammates and community members gathered to remember the teenager whose life ended so suddenly.

The school district also made grief counselors available to students and staff as they worked through the loss.

The D.J. Reader Foundation, established by former Grimsley High School athlete and current New York Giants player D.J. Reader, is also helping the Fewell family with funeral expenses, according to the school district.
