LITTLE GUS VANISHED WITHOUT A TRACE — ONE YEAR LATER, HIS FAMILY IS STILL WAITING FOR ANSWERS

Almost one year after four-year-old Gus Lamont disappeared from his family’s remote property in South Australia, investigators still have no confirmed answer about what happened to him.

Gus was last seen on September 27, 2025, at Oak Park Station near Yunta, roughly 275 kilometres northeast of Adelaide.

He was just four years old.

Despite one of the largest and most intensive missing-person searches ever conducted by South Australian Police, no trace of the little boy has been found.

GUS WAS PLAYING OUTSIDE WHEN HE DISAPPEARED

According to police, Gus was seen by his grandmother at around 5 p.m. on September 27, 2025.

He had been playing on a mound of dirt near the family home.

About half an hour later, his grandmother went to call him inside.

Gus was gone.

The property was a vast and isolated sheep station, surrounded by remote Australian outback.

His disappearance immediately triggered a major search operation.

Search teams initially considered the possibility that the little boy had wandered away from the property.

But months of searching produced no sign of him.

HUNDREDS SEARCHED THE OUTBACK

The scale of the search was enormous.

South Australian Police said the operation involved 163 police members and 230 additional resources, including emergency-service personnel, Australian Defence Force members, Indigenous trackers and community volunteers.

Teams conducted eight major ground searches covering a radius of approximately 5.47 kilometres around the homestead.

Three dams were searched and drained, while six mine shafts within a 10-kilometre radius were also examined.

Aircraft, drones and specialist cameras were deployed over an area covering hundreds of square kilometres.

Some aerial imagery was subsequently processed using specialised artificial-intelligence software and reviewed by investigators.

Yet nothing was found.

Not Gus.

Not his hat.

Not his shirt.

Not even the small boots he had been wearing when he disappeared.

POLICE EVENTUALLY CHANGED THEIR THEORY

In February 2026, police formally declared Gus’s disappearance a major crime.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said investigators had found no physical or other evidence indicating that Gus had simply wandered away.

Police said they had investigated two main possibilities: that Gus had been abducted by someone unknown to the family, or that someone known to him had been involved.

Investigators said they had found no evidence supporting the unknown-abduction theory.

The investigation subsequently focused on people known to Gus.

Police also confirmed that a person who lived at the property and was known to the boy had become a suspect.

However, police have repeatedly stated that Gus’s parents, Jess and Joshua, are not suspects in his disappearance.

THE SEARCH HAS NEVER FULLY STOPPED

Even after the huge initial operation ended, investigators continued returning to Oak Park Station.

In May 2026, heavy rain created new opportunities for detectives to search areas that may have been affected by changing ground and water conditions.

Task Force Horizon conducted another three-day search, examining more than 30 kilometres of waterways and creeks, as well as wells and bores.

No new evidence was found.

Police said they would continue with further aerial surveys and searches whenever new information or environmental conditions created an opportunity.

GUS’S FAMILY IS STILL WAITING

For Gus’s parents, the passage of time has brought no closure.

In a statement released earlier in the investigation, Jess and Joshua described their lives as having been shattered by their son’s disappearance.

They have continued to appeal for information that could help investigators locate him.

Meanwhile, Gus’s grandmother Josie Murray has publicly rejected suggestions that she was involved in a cover-up.

She has spoken about the enormous emotional toll of the investigation and the scrutiny placed on members of the family.

Police have also stressed that the investigation remains active.

A NEW PUSH FOR INFORMATION

As the one-year anniversary approaches, authorities are making another effort to generate information that could help solve the mystery.

Police are seeking a reward and encouraging anyone who may have information about Gus’s disappearance to come forward.

The case remains unresolved, and investigators have not publicly established what happened to the four-year-old after he disappeared from the family property.

Nearly a year later, the central questions remain unanswered:

Where did little Gus go?

What happened after he disappeared?

And most importantly — where is he now?

For his family, there is still only one hope: that someone, somewhere, knows something that can finally lead them to Gus.
