A BODY FOUND BEFORE 2 A.M. — MONTHS OF CCTV, FORENSIC TESTS AND A MURDER CASE THAT HAS SHAKEN MELBOURNE

The death of 21-year-old Jayda Allen Bonner has prompted a complex investigation, with detectives examining extensive surveillance footage and forensic evidence as her family grieves a young woman they describe as having “a heart of gold.”

In the early hours of Saturday, October 10, emergency services were called to an apartment complex on Cardigan Street in Carlton, an inner-city suburb of Melbourne, Australia.

Within days, a 31-year-old man known to Jayda, Liban Ali, surrendered to police. He was subsequently charged with her murder and appeared before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

The charge marks a significant development in the investigation, but detectives have made clear that substantial work remains before the evidence can be fully examined.

 A complex investigation still underway

During the court hearing, the lead detective outlined the scale of the work ahead.

Investigators are examining months of CCTV footage, alongside DNA testing, blood-pattern analysis and complex autopsy examinations. Police are also investigating allegations of prolonged family violence and examining the accused’s actions after the incident.

The extensive evidence has led detectives to request additional time to prepare their case. Authorities were granted 16 weeks to compile the brief of evidence for the defence.

These examinations may help investigators establish the circumstances surrounding Jayda’s death. However, the full findings have not yet been established publicly, and the allegations must be tested through the legal process.

Beyond the court proceedings, Jayda’s family is facing an immeasurable loss.

Her aunt, Kellie Carter-Bell, described her as a gentle soul who would do anything to help others. The family has remembered Jayda as a caring, loving young woman with so much life ahead of her.

Jayda was a Yagera woman with family in Queensland. Her death has brought together relatives, friends and members of the wider community, many of whom have left flowers, photographs, candles and handwritten messages outside the apartment complex.

A traditional smoking ceremony and a march calling for justice and greater protection for women were also organised in her memory.

 What happens next?

Ali was remanded in custody following his court appearance. He did not apply for bail at that hearing and is expected to return to court in March 2027, according to reports published after the hearing.

A separate 60-year-old man who was initially arrested after Jayda was found has been released pending further inquiries.

The investigation remains ongoing. Ali has been charged but has not been convicted, and he is entitled to a fair trial.

A family still searching for answers

For Jayda’s loved ones, the legal process is only one part of a much larger tragedy. They are mourning a young woman whose future held possibilities that will now never be realised.

As detectives continue reviewing evidence, the community’s tributes serve as a reminder that Jayda was more than the circumstances surrounding her death. She was a daughter, a niece, a friend and a young woman deeply loved by those around her.

Her family’s message is clear: they want Jayda to be remembered, her life to matter, and her story not to be forgotten.
