MOTHER AND DAUGHTER FOUND DEAD AFTER SUSPECTED GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK: Jenny Balcarras, 48, and Daughter Selah Reed Discovered Days After Going for a Walk
A mother and daughter who shared a love of nature and the outdoors have been found dead in Bella Coola, British Columbia, following what authorities believe may have been a grizzly bear attack. Jenny Balcarras, 48, and her youngest daughter, Selah Reed, disappeared after going for a walk together. Their deaths have devastated their family and left the local community shaken.
A heartbreaking discovery in British Columbia has left a family grieving the loss of two loved ones after a mother and daughter were found dead following a suspected grizzly bear encounter.
Jenny Balcarras, 48, and her youngest daughter, Selah Reed, had reportedly gone for a walk on Saturday afternoon, October 31, in the Bella Coola area.
The two women were known to enjoy spending time outdoors together. Their walk took them to an area near the Snooka West Trail, a familiar location that was only a short drive from their home.
When family members were unable to reach them, concerns quickly grew.
The women were reported missing on Sunday, November 1, prompting a search of the surrounding area. Their vehicle was eventually discovered parked near the trail, raising further concern about their whereabouts.
The search ended in tragedy.
Jenny’s body was discovered on Monday, November 2. Her daughter Selah was located the following day, Tuesday, November 3.
Authorities are investigating the deaths as a suspected bear attack, although the exact circumstances have yet to be fully established.
A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER WHO SHARED AN UNBREAKABLE BOND
For their family, the loss is particularly devastating because Jenny and Selah were not only mother and daughter but also close companions who regularly enjoyed spending time together.
Loved ones described the two as extremely close, with their shared love of outdoor activities bringing them together throughout their lives.
Their decision to go walking was reportedly nothing unusual. The trail was familiar to them, and spending time in nature was something they both enjoyed.
Jenny was a mother of four and a grandmother who had recently moved to Bella Coola to begin working as an art therapist at a local school.
She was remembered as a talented artist and a compassionate woman who found joy in painting, music, reading and connecting with others.
Her creative interests were an important part of her identity, and her work as an art therapist reflected her desire to support and connect with people through creativity.
To her family, she was much more than an artist or educator. She was a mother, grandmother and loved one whose presence had become an important part of everyday life.
SELAH REED: A CREATIVE YOUNG WOMAN WITH A LOVE FOR THE ARTS
Selah Reed, Jenny’s youngest daughter, was also remembered for her gentle personality and creative spirit.
She worked as an educational assistant while continuing her studies part-time.
Those who knew her described a young woman with a variety of interests, including ballet, art and hiking.
Like her mother, Selah enjoyed spending time outdoors. Their shared interests helped strengthen the special relationship they had built over the years.
The two women had a routine of enjoying outdoor activities together, making the circumstances of their final walk particularly heartbreaking for those who loved them.
Their deaths have left relatives facing the unimaginable reality of losing two generations of the same family in a single incident.
A COMMUNITY STILL REMEMBERING AN EARLIER GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK
The tragedy has also renewed concerns about encounters between people and wildlife in Bella Coola.
The community was previously shaken by another serious grizzly bear incident in November 2025, when a group of elementary schoolchildren and teachers were attacked during an outdoor school outing.
According to reports, 11 people were injured in that incident.
Three children and one teacher suffered serious injuries, while seven other individuals received treatment at the scene.
The attack prompted an extensive search for the bear believed to have been responsible. However, authorities were unable to identify the animal.
The latest deaths have brought those memories back for residents, particularly families who regularly use local trails and outdoor recreation areas.
Bella Coola is surrounded by wilderness and is home to a variety of wildlife, including grizzly bears. Although encounters do not always result in harm, the risks can be significant when people unexpectedly come into close contact with these powerful animals.
AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATE SUSPECTED BEAR INVOLVEMENT
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service is investigating the deaths of Jenny and Selah.
Officers are examining the area surrounding Snooka West Trail and working to establish exactly what happened during the women’s walk.
Investigators are also attempting to determine whether a grizzly bear was responsible.
Authorities have indicated that any bear captured during the investigation will be assessed. If an animal is confirmed to have been involved in the fatal attack, it will be euthanized.
In the meantime, residents and visitors have been warned to stay away from Snooka West Trail while officers continue their work.
The investigation remains important not only for determining the circumstances of the two deaths but also for understanding whether there is an ongoing wildlife safety concern in the area.
A FAMILY LEFT WITH AN UNIMAGINABLE LOSS
As investigators work to establish what happened, Jenny and Selah’s loved ones are left facing a loss that words cannot adequately describe.
Jenny had recently begun a new chapter in Bella Coola, bringing her artistic talents and experience to a local school. She was a mother of four, a grandmother and a woman remembered for her compassion and creativity.
Selah was building her own future through work and education, while maintaining the interests and passions that made her unique.
Their final outing was supposed to be another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors together.
Instead, it became the last journey they would share.
For their family, the tragedy is not simply about two lives lost. It is about a mother and daughter whose bond was central to their lives, whose shared memories will now become treasured reminders of the time they spent together.
As the investigation continues, the Bella Coola community is mourning alongside their loved ones.
Jenny and Selah will be remembered not for the circumstances of their deaths, but for the lives they lived, the people they loved and the special connection they shared.
May they both rest in peace.
