Born Without Legs but Full of Determination 13-Year-Old Sahroni Dreams of School and a Brighter Future Despite Life’s Challenges

In a small rural community, 13-year-old Muhamad Syahroeni — affectionately called Sahroni by his family — is quietly becoming a symbol of resilience and determination. Born with a rare physical condition that left him without both legs, Sahroni has grown up facing challenges that many children his age could hardly imagine. Yet those who know him best say his spirit is far bigger than any obstacle.
“Mom, why don’t I have legs? My friends all have them, but I don’t…” Sahroni once asked when he was younger.
It was a difficult moment for his mother, Samsiah, now 51. But instead of allowing the question to become a source of sadness, she encouraged her son to see his life in a different light — one defined by courage, persistence, and belief in his own abilities.

Today, Sahroni moves around using the strength of his arms and hands, carefully lifting himself forward step by step. Though the journey may be slower than most, he refuses to let it hold him back from living an active life.
Neighbors often see Sahroni outside with other children, laughing and playing games. One of his favorite activities is soccer. While he cannot run across the field like the others, he still joins in the fun, cheering loudly, kicking the ball when he can, and sharing joyful moments with his friends.
“He’s always smiling,” said a neighbor. “You rarely see him discouraged.”
At school, Sahroni is known for his dedication to learning. Teachers say he pays close attention in class and works hard on his studies. He especially enjoys memorization exercises and dreams of continuing his education as far as possible.
Despite his cheerful personality, Sahroni has also experienced moments of difficulty. Sometimes classmates tease him about his condition. But instead of letting it break his confidence, he remembers the words his mother often repeats to him.
“My mother always tells me I must stay strong and keep my enthusiasm,” Sahroni shared. “She says everyone has their own path.”

His greatest wish is simple but powerful: to attend school regularly, gain knowledge, and one day make his parents proud.
For Samsiah, hearing her son talk about his dreams fills her heart with both pride and emotion. She has watched him grow into a determined young boy who refuses to let circumstances define his future.
“He has such big dreams,” she said softly. “Even with his challenges, he always believes in tomorrow.”
Behind Sahroni’s inspiring determination, however, lies a family facing significant economic hardship.
His father, Junaedi, 64, has worked for many years as a construction laborer. Recently, finding steady work has become increasingly difficult. Some weeks bring short periods of employment, but long stretches without work often follow.
“Sometimes I work for one week and then rest for two months because there is no job,” Junaedi explained quietly. “As a father, I worry that I can’t provide enough for my family.”
To help support the household, Samsiah takes on whatever work she can find in nearby rice fields. During the harvest season, she joins other workers planting or gathering crops. But when the dry season arrives, those opportunities become rare.

“When the fields are dry, there is no work,” she said. “We just try to get through each day.”
Despite these difficulties, the family continues to support Sahroni’s dreams with unwavering love. Every evening, they gather together in their modest home, talking about the future and encouraging one another to stay hopeful.
Junaedi admits his greatest fear is not the financial struggle itself, but the possibility that his son might lose confidence in his dreams.
“I never want Sahroni to feel that his hopes are too big,” he said.
But anyone who spends even a short time with the young boy quickly realizes that his determination remains unshaken.
Sahroni talks excitedly about continuing his education and someday building a better life for his parents. He believes that knowledge, hard work, and perseverance will open doors that today seem far away.
His story has begun to draw attention in the local community, where neighbors and teachers see him as a reminder that courage often appears in the most unexpected places.
For Sahroni, the message is simple: limitations do not have to define a person’s future.
With a bright smile, steady determination, and the encouragement of his parents, the 13-year-old continues to move forward — one small step at a time — toward the dreams he holds so dearly.
