Five Dogs Rescued From Hot Car in Newport Beach After Reaching Dangerous Temperatures

Five dogs were rescued after being found trapped inside a hot vehicle in Newport Beach, California, on May 18, 2026.

An Animal Control officer discovered the dogs locked inside the car with the windows cracked only slightly. The animals were showing signs of heat-related distress, prompting police officers to break the vehicle’s windows to get them out.

Following the rescue, the dogs were taken for veterinary examination. Doctors determined that their body temperatures had reached potentially fatal levels, highlighting the serious danger posed by leaving animals inside vehicles even when windows are partially open.

Fortunately, all five dogs survived and have since recovered.

The case has been referred to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for review, where authorities will determine whether criminal charges are warranted.

The incident serves as another warning about the potentially deadly effects of leaving pets inside vehicles during warm weather.
