Virginia Parents Denied Bail After 5-Year-Old Daughter Found Dead in South Carolina Waters

The parents of a 5-year-old Virginia girl remain in custody after their daughter was found dead in South Carolina and a judge denied bail in the case.

Saylor Hayes went missing on August 30, 2026, while her family was visiting Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Her body was discovered the following day, August 31, in waters near Hagley Landing, bringing a tragic end to the search for the young girl.

Saylor’s parents, John Hayes III and Geordyn Hayes, were arrested in Carter County, Tennessee, on September 1. Both are facing charges of “unlawfully placing a child at risk/willfully abandoning a child.”

The couple waived extradition to South Carolina and were subsequently returned to Georgetown County, where they are facing the charges.

On September 5, a South Carolina judge denied bail for both parents. They remain in custody as the criminal case moves forward.

Meanwhile, investigators are continuing to determine exactly how Saylor died.

A preliminary examination reportedly found no obvious signs of trauma. The examination did, however, reveal pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs, which is consistent with drowning.

Authorities have not yet issued a final determination regarding the girl’s cause and manner of death. The final autopsy report remains pending, meaning the preliminary findings should not be considered the final conclusion.

The circumstances surrounding Saylor’s disappearance and death are now central to the investigation, while prosecutors pursue the allegations against her parents.

The decision to deny bail means both parents will remain behind bars while the case proceeds. Further court proceedings are expected to provide additional information about the allegations and the evidence being presented by investigators.

The charges against John Hayes III and Geordyn Hayes are allegations, and neither has been convicted. They are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

As authorities await the final autopsy findings, investigators continue examining the events that led to Saylor’s disappearance and the discovery of her body near Hagley Landing.
