She Donated Bone Marrow to a Baby She Had Never Met — Then Asked Her to Be Her Flower Girl

She joined a bone marrow donor registry in college, never expecting that she would actually receive the call.

Then, about a year later, the call came.

Hayden Hatfield Ryals had signed up for the Be The Match registry in 2015 while she was in college. In 2016, she learned that she was a match for an anonymous baby girl who was desperately fighting leukemia.

That little girl was Skye Savren-McCormick.

Skye was diagnosed with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia in March 2016, just days before her first birthday. Doctors determined that she urgently needed a bone marrow transplant.

On July 28, 2016, Hayden underwent a procedure in Alabama to have her bone marrow collected. The following day, doctors in California transplanted the donated marrow into Skye.

But the transplant was only the beginning of Skye’s long and difficult medical journey.

She experienced serious complications and later developed another cancer, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease. After further treatment, Skye ultimately needed another transplant from a second donor in April 2017.

Her mother later explained just how important Hayden’s donation had been.

Without Hayden’s transplant, she said, Skye would not have survived long enough to receive the second one.

“She saved our daughter’s life,” Skye’s mother said.

For the first year after the donation, rules prevented Hayden and Skye’s family from directly identifying one another. Eventually, however, the families were able to connect.

They began exchanging messages and gradually developed a close relationship, even though Hayden and Skye still had never met face-to-face.

Then, for Skye’s third birthday, Hayden sent her a very special surprise.

Among the gifts was an invitation to Hayden’s upcoming wedding.

Hayden wanted Skye to be her flower girl.

The two finally met in person at the wedding rehearsal. Hayden later recalled seeing Skye walk toward her and immediately dropping to her knees as the little girl hugged her.

On June 9, 2018, three-year-old Skye walked down the aisle in Alabama as the flower girl at the wedding of the woman whose donated bone marrow had helped carry her through one of the most difficult chapters of her young life.

For Hayden, however, the story was never simply about being a donor or a hero.

She later described Skye in a way that turned the story completely around:

“She’s the one that saved me.”

What began with a simple cheek swab and a decision to join a donor registry ultimately connected two families forever — and transformed a stranger’s act of generosity into a lifelong bond.
