FOUR-YEAR-OLD GUS LAMONT VANISHED FROM HIS RURAL HOME — MONTHS LATER, POLICE HAVE A SUSPECT

Four-year-old August “Gus” Lamont disappeared from his family’s remote Australian sheep station more than five months ago.

Despite one of the largest and most extensive searches in South Australia, the little boy has still not been found.

Now, investigators have identified a suspect who was known to Gus and lived at the property where he disappeared.

Gus was reported missing from Oak Park Station, a vast sheep property near Yunta, South Australia, on September 27, 2025.

According to police, he had been playing outside the family homestead before he suddenly disappeared. His family initially believed he may have wandered into the surrounding outback.

The search quickly expanded across the enormous property, involving police, emergency services, volunteers, specialist teams, dogs, drones and aircraft.

A single footprint found roughly 500 meters from the homestead became one of the early clues examined by investigators.

POLICE EVENTUALLY DECLARE THE CASE A MAJOR CRIME

For months, authorities investigated several possible explanations for Gus’s disappearance.

But on February 5, 2026, South Australia Police announced a major development.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said a person who lived at Oak Park Station had withdrawn their cooperation with police and was now considered a suspect.

Police stressed that Gus’ parents were not suspects.

Investigators said they had identified inconsistencies and discrepancies in information surrounding the boy’s disappearance.

A search warrant was executed at the property in January, and officers seized a vehicle, a motorcycle and electronic devices for forensic examination.

Police also said they had investigated the possibility that Gus had wandered away, been abducted by an unknown person or that someone known to him had been involved.

By February, investigators said they no longer believed Gus was alive and that there was no evidence supporting the theory that he had been abducted by an unknown person.

THE SEARCH HAS COVERED AN ENORMOUS AREA

Oak Park Station covers approximately 60,000 hectares, making the search extraordinarily challenging.

Authorities have searched dams, mine shafts, waterways, surrounding bushland and large areas around the homestead.

Hundreds of police and other personnel have taken part in the operation.

According to South Australia Police, the wider search involved 163 police members and 230 non-police resources, including State Emergency Service personnel, the Australian Defence Force, an Indigenous tracker and community volunteers.

Despite those efforts, no physical evidence has been found that explains what happened to Gus.

MONTHS LATER, THERE ARE STILL NO ANSWERS

A renewed search at Oak Park Station in May 2026 also failed to uncover new evidence.

Police said forensic testing of items seized from the property had not produced additional clues.

At that time, investigators confirmed that one of Gus’s grandparents remained a suspect, while saying no other suspects or persons of interest had been identified.

Gus’s parents, Josh Lamont and Jess Murray, have continued to appeal for information.

In February, they described the situation as devastating and said every moment without their son was unbearable. They urged anyone with even the smallest piece of information to come forward.

More than 500 people who were in or around Oak Park Station when Gus disappeared have been identified and investigated, according to police.

Authorities have also received hundreds of tips from the public.

A FAMILY STILL WAITING FOR ANSWERS

More than a year after Gus was last seen, the mystery surrounding his disappearance remains unresolved.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case, while Gus’s family remains without the answers they have been searching for.

The investigation has now moved far beyond the initial search for a child who may have wandered into the Australian outback.

With a suspect identified but Gus still missing, investigators are continuing to examine what happened at Oak Park Station on the day the four-year-old vanished.

For his parents, however, the central question remains painfully simple:
