RACHEL ALLEN’S SON FACES NINE CHARGES AFTER ALLEGED GARDA ASSAULTS — COURT GIVES HIM THREE MORE WEEKS TO DECIDE HIS NEXT MOVE

The son of celebrity chef Rachel Allen has been given three more weeks to decide whether he will plead guilty or contest a series of serious charges stemming from an incident in County Cork.

Joshua Allen, 26, appeared before Midleton District Court on Thursday, September 17, where his solicitor requested another adjournment while seeking clarification from Ireland’s Director of Public Prosecutions.

Allen is facing nine charges arising from alleged incidents in the Shanagarry area of East Cork on October 27, 2025.

The charges include allegations that he assaulted two Gardaí, drove a van toward a Garda at speed, drove dangerously and while intoxicated, possessed ketamine and a knife, resisted a Garda and failed to stop at a Garda checkpoint.

THE CASE THAT HAS BEEN BEFORE THE COURTS FOR MONTHS

The case first came before the courts in November 2025.

At an earlier hearing in July, Allen was granted an adjournment amid industrial action by solicitors connected to changes in the criminal legal-aid system.

On Thursday, his solicitor Don Ryan again asked Judge Colm Roberts for additional time, explaining that he was seeking clarification on certain matters from the DPP.

Judge Roberts granted the request but made clear that the case could not continue indefinitely through repeated adjournments.

Allen was remanded on bail until October 8, when he is expected to either enter a signed plea or request a book of evidence if he intends to contest the charges.

The judge marked the case peremptory, meaning the matter is expected to progress at the next hearing.

WHAT ARE THE NINE CHARGES?

The allegations date back to the night of October 27, 2025, in and around Shanagarry.

One of the most serious allegations concerns a red Ford Transit van.

Prosecutors allege Allen failed to stop when directed to do so at a Garda checkpoint on the R629 at Monagurra, Shanagarry.

It is further alleged that he then drove the vehicle toward Garda Ciaran Cummins McCarthy at speed, forcing the officer to take evasive action to avoid being struck.

Allen also faces a separate charge of dangerous driving relating to the same location.

ALLEGATIONS OF DRUG-IMPAIRED DRIVING

A third charge alleges that Allen drove while intoxicated on the R632 at Shanagarry South.

According to the prosecution allegations reported in court, testing indicated the presence of cocaine and cannabis.

He is also charged with the unlawful possession of ketamine.

Another charge alleges that he possessed a sharply pointed knife at Shanagarry South.

TWO GARDA ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS

Two of the charges concern alleged incidents involving Gardaí.

Allen is charged with assaulting Garda Ciaran Cummins McCarthy and with assault causing harm to Garda Patrick Costello.

He is also charged with allegedly resisting Garda McCarthy while the officer was carrying out his duties.

The allegations are matters before the court and have not been proven. Allen remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until a court determines otherwise.

WHO IS JOSHUA ALLEN?

Allen is the eldest son of Irish celebrity chef and author Rachel Allen.

He has also competed in mixed martial arts and has worked as a stonemason, according to reports.

His family is closely associated with the Ballymaloe food and hospitality business in County Cork.

His great-grandmother, Myrtle Allen, founded Ballymaloe House, while Rachel Allen and Darina Allen became well-known figures in Irish food and television.

ANOTHER COURT APPEARANCE AHEAD

For now, the case remains unresolved.

Joshua Allen has not entered a final plea on the nine charges, and Thursday’s hearing was focused on allowing his legal team additional time to clarify matters with the DPP.

He remains on bail and is due back before Midleton District Court on October 8, 2026.

That hearing is expected to mark the next significant step in a case that has already remained before the courts for almost a year.

Until then, the allegations against Allen remain just that — allegations.

The court will ultimately determine what happens next.
