Cannon Hall Farm has once again become the emotional centre of The Yorkshire Vet as the Nicholson family faces a painful reminder of the losses that have surrounded its beloved Shire horses.

In the latest episode, equine vet Shona Searson visits the South Yorkshire farm to examine two mares, Silver and Brooke, in the hope of discovering whether either could be carrying a foal by the late Shire stallion Herkules.

For farmers Rob and Dave Nicholson, the examinations are about more than a routine pregnancy check. They could offer a chance for Herkules’ bloodline and legacy to continue after his unexpected death.

HERKULES WAS A HORSE THE FAMILY NEVER FORGOT

Herkules was a three-year-old Shire stallion who died from colic in 2025.

His death was a major blow to the Nicholson family, who had formed a particularly strong bond with the enormous horse.

Using veterinary ultrasound, Shona examined the mares for signs of pregnancy.

The scans were filled with emotion because any potential foal would represent a connection to Herkules after his death.

The farm’s own website recently promoted an evening with equine vet Marco, describing the previous few months as “an incredibly difficult” period and referring to the heartbreaking losses within the Shire family.

The farm also hosted a special online broadcast in June celebrating its five Shire foals.

During that update, the Nicholson family revealed that two of the youngsters, Iris and Soldier, had suffered serious complications and required specialist hospital treatment.

Both subsequently returned safely to Cannon Hall Farm.
