TWO BRITISH WOMEN KILLED WHILE RESCUING DOGS IN ROMANIA AS HEARTBROKEN DAD PAYS TRIBUTE

Two British women who travelled to Romania as part of a dog rescue mission have died in a devastating multi-vehicle crash, along with eight of the animals they were transporting.

Allison Condon, 61, from Northamptonshire, and Rachael Harvey-Purkiss, 41, from Essex, were travelling in a UK-registered minibus carrying 10 rescue dogs when the collision happened in western Romania on Thursday, September 24.

Both women were pronounced dead at the scene.

Eight of the dogs also died in the crash, while two were reportedly believed to have survived.

The women had been involved in an animal rescue mission for Homeward Bound, a British non-profit organization working to rescue and rehome dogs.

A TRAGIC END TO A RESCUE MISSION

The crash happened on the DN 6 road in Caraș-Severin County, western Romania, close to the Serbian border.

According to local police, the collision involved the minibus carrying the women and dogs, along with two trucks and another van.

Emergency crews were called to the scene and faced a severely damaged vehicle.

Paramedics pronounced Allison and Rachael dead at the scene.

The drivers of the other vehicles were treated by emergency responders but were not taken to hospital, according to reports.

The road was affected by significant delays following the crash.

Romanian authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

EIGHT RESCUE DOGS ALSO DIED

The two women were not travelling for a holiday.

They were carrying 10 dogs as part of their rescue work when the crash occurred.

Eight of the animals reportedly died.

Two others are believed to have survived the collision.

The loss has made the tragedy even more painful for the rescue community, which was already mourning the deaths of the two volunteers.

Homeward Bound spokesperson Teresa Shears paid an emotional tribute to the women.

She described Allison and Rachael as “two beautiful rare diamonds” and said their hearts were filled with love and care for animals.

She also remembered the dogs who died alongside them.

The organization said the loss had left its community devastated.

RACHAEL’S FATHER SHARES FINAL PHOTO

Rachael’s father, Paul, has since paid a heartbreaking tribute to his daughter.

He shared what he described as the final image he had received of Rachael before the crash.

Alongside the photograph, he expressed his grief and remembered his daughter as his “beautiful daughter.”

Paul also thanked people for their messages and support following Rachael’s death.

He urged those who cared about the animals to continue supporting the rescue mission that had been so important to his daughter.

For the family, the photograph has become an especially painful final memory of Rachael before the tragedy.

REMEMBERED FOR THEIR LOVE OF ANIMALS

Those who knew the two women have described them as passionate animal lovers who devoted their time to helping vulnerable dogs.

Their trip was part of a wider effort to give rescued animals a chance of finding new homes.

The tragedy has therefore affected not only the families of Allison and Rachael, but also the wider rescue community.

Homeward Bound said the two women would not be forgotten.

Their deaths have also highlighted the risks faced by volunteers who travel long distances as part of animal rescue operations.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

Romanian police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision.

Authorities have reportedly opened a manslaughter investigation as they work to establish exactly how the four-vehicle crash occurred.

At this stage, investigators have not publicly established responsibility for the collision.

The UK Foreign Office said it had not been approached for assistance but that staff were ready to support British nationals overseas if required.

As investigators work to determine what happened on the DN 6, Allison and Rachael are being remembered for something very different from the circumstances in which they died.

They had set out to help animals in need.

Instead, their journey ended in tragedy — leaving two families grieving, a rescue organization mourning two dedicated volunteers, and eight dogs lost alongside them.

For Rachael’s father Paul, one final photograph now carries the weight of an entire lifetime of memories.
