THREE TEENAGERS DROWNED AFTER CAR PLUNGED INTO RIVER WEAR — INQUEST REVEALS TRAGIC DETAILS AS FAMILIES GRIEVE
SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND — Three teenagers who died after a car plunged into the River Wear were likely drowned, an inquest has heard, as investigators continue examining the circumstances of the devastating incident.
Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both 16, died after an Audi A3 went through a barrier and entered the river near Panns Bank in Sunderland on September 29, 2026.
The three teenagers were later found inside the submerged vehicle by specialist divers. A fourth teenager, a 17-year-old boy, managed to escape from the car and reach safety.
At separate inquest openings on October 12, the court heard that the preliminary causes of death for all three victims were consistent with drowning. Coroner’s officer Vicky Ross explained that one occupant had managed to get out of the vehicle, while the other three were unable to escape.
The proceedings were adjourned until January 21, 2027, as police inquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
A Desperate Escape From the Submerged Car
The crash prompted a major emergency response, with police officers, firefighters, paramedics, the RNLI and coastguard teams attending the scene.
An eyewitness previously described seeing the Audi near the barriers shortly before it entered the water. The witness said the car appeared to move suddenly through the barrier and down towards the river.
The surviving teenager managed to get out of the submerged vehicle and swim towards safety. According to an earlier account reported by The Sun, he called for help before reaching a ladder and climbing out of the water.
Despite the emergency response, the other three occupants could not be rescued in time.
Authorities have not publicly established all the circumstances leading up to the crash. Investigators are continuing to examine what happened and who was driving when the vehicle entered the river.
Surviving Teen Released on Bail
The surviving 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was later released on bail while further inquiries continued.
An arrest on suspicion of an offence does not establish guilt. Police have not concluded their investigation, and the circumstances of the crash remain subject to further examination.
The inquest proceedings have also been adjourned while the investigation continues.
Three Young Lives Remembered
The deaths have devastated families, friends and the wider Sunderland community. All three teenagers were students at Sunderland College’s Bede Campus.
The college expressed profound sadness over the loss, describing the deaths as a heartbreaking tragedy for its community and the city. It also offered support to students and staff affected by the incident and asked that the families’ privacy be respected.
Tributes continued during Sunderland’s match against Brighton, where players wore black armbands and supporters were invited to join a minute’s applause in memory of Jackson, Luke and Zara.
For those who knew the teenagers, the tragedy represents the loss of three young lives with futures still ahead of them. Their families are now left to navigate an unimaginable period of grief while the investigation continues.
As authorities work to establish exactly what happened that afternoon, the inquests will remain an important part of the process of understanding the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
For now, the focus remains on remembering Jackson Duke, Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, and supporting the families and friends whose lives have been changed forever.
