YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK TRAGEDY: INQUIRY UNDERWAY AFTER WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S FATAL ENCOUNTER WITH A TIGER

A family is grieving after 24-year-old William Chapman died at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, England. As authorities investigate how he entered the tiger enclosure, his loved ones are asking for compassion, answers and respect during an unimaginably painful time.

A visit to a wildlife park ended in tragedy on October 10, 2026, when William Chapman died after entering the enclosure of an Amur tiger named Altai.

Emergency services were called shortly after 1:30 p.m. South Yorkshire Police confirmed that Chapman had entered the enclosure and was attacked by the tiger. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of emergency personnel.

The opening of the inquest at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on October 15 provided further details about the incident.

The hearing was told that Chapman climbed over two fences before entering the enclosure. He was then approached by the tiger, and the physical encounter resulted in multiple traumatic injuries that rapidly led to his death.

These are preliminary findings. A full inquest is scheduled for March 18, 2027, when further evidence is expected to be examined. <

Chapman’s family described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” who was deeply loved.

They also revealed that he had experienced significant mental health difficulties over several years and had been prescribed medication. During the inquest, the coroner’s officer said the family had raised concerns about his contact with mental health services before his death.

The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has launched an independent patient-safety investigation. The family has said it is for the coroner to determine what role, if any, his health history played in the circumstances surrounding his death.

His relatives have also asked people to stop sharing distressing footage of the incident, explaining that its circulation is causing further suffering at an already devastating time.

THE PARK AND THE TIGER REMAIN UNDER SCRUTINY

Yorkshire Wildlife Park temporarily closed after the incident while authorities investigated. The park reopened on October 16 and said it was cooperating with the relevant agencies.

The City of Doncaster Council has launched a separate health and safety investigation. The park has also confirmed that Altai is safe and will not be euthanized as a result of the incident.

Authorities have not yet published their final conclusions about the circumstances surrounding Chapman’s entry into the enclosure. The ongoing inquiries will examine the available evidence before any definitive findings are made.

REMEMBERING WILLIAM CHAPMAN

Beyond the headlines, a family has lost someone they loved, and those who knew Chapman are left to mourn his life and remember him beyond the circumstances of his death.

The investigation is continuing, with a full inquest still ahead. Until then, his family’s request is clear: allow them space to grieve, avoid circulating distressing footage and let the evidence guide the search for answers.
