THREE TEENAGERS KILLED AFTER CAR PLUNGES INTO RIVER — FAMILIES REMEMBER THE LIVES BEHIND THE TRAGEDY

Three teenagers have died after the car they were travelling in left the road and plunged into the River Wear in Sunderland, leaving their families and a local college community devastated.

The victims have been identified as Jackson Duke, 17, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Zara Shaw, 16.

Their deaths have prompted an outpouring of grief across Sunderland, as friends, classmates and relatives remember three young people whose lives ended far too soon.

The tragedy happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. on September 29, when a black Audi A3 left the road at Panns Bank, near Wearmouth Bridge, and entered the River Wear.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with police divers and other specialist teams working to locate those inside the vehicle.

Three teenagers were ultimately found to have died.

Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge, 16, were from the Sunderland area, while Zara Shaw, 16, was from Houghton-le-Spring.

All three were students at Sunderland College’s Bede Campus.

The college described their deaths as a heartbreaking loss for its community and offered condolences to their families, friends and loved ones.

Police released photographs of the three teenagers as their identities were confirmed.

Jackson was remembered through an image showing the 17-year-old dressed smartly in a suit and tie.

Luke, 16, appeared smiling and giving a thumbs-up in another photograph.

Zara, also 16, was pictured smiling over an ice-cream dessert.

For their families, however, those photographs represent much more than images accompanying a news story.

They are reminders of three teenagers who had friends, families, plans and futures ahead of them.

Northumbria Police Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie said the three teenagers had “their whole futures ahead of them” and would be hugely missed.

A FOURTH TEENAGER SURVIVED

There was another teenager inside the Audi.

The 17-year-old managed to reach safety and suffered non-serious injuries.

He was initially taken for medical treatment before being arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police have stressed that their investigation is still at an early stage and that enquiries are continuing to establish exactly what happened, including who was driving the vehicle at the time.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

The arrest is an allegation only and does not establish guilt.

The recovery operation continued into the following day.

Police divers entered the River Wear and attached equipment to the black Audi before it was lifted from the water using a crane.

The vehicle emerged upside down, with visible damage to its front bumper and windscreen.

As the operation unfolded, members of the public gathered nearby.

Some people also left flowers close to the river, creating a quiet memorial for the teenagers who had died.
